Settle in, grab some popcorn and pray that you’ll get some work done after coming across these new shows...

The Duchess

Comedian Katherine Ryan stars in this new sit-com, where she explores her relationship with her daughter. The show centers around Katherine wanting a second child, and contemplating whether to ask her ex, a lead singer in a boyband that she despises, or a sperm donor. Katherine Ryan played a heightened version of herself, which she doesn’t consider a bad thing- “I mean, she’s so much cooler than I am.” With six episodes around half an hour-long, and a guest appearance from the fabulous Maya Jama, what more could you want?

UK Netflix release date: Friday 11 September

Bookmarks

Bookmarks is a new poignant show which aims to give rise to black voices and stories, in which prominent celebrities and authors each read a children’s story which centers around race and identity. Featuring the likes of Lupita Nyong and Tiffany Haddish this series is more important than ever in teaching kids from a young age about racial inequality. Not to mention its hosted by bad-ass teenage activist Marley Dias, who created the hashtag #1000BlackGirlBooks in response to inadequate representation of black female voices on her school reading list.

UK Netflix release date: Tuesday 1 September

The Devil All the Time

With an all-star cast, from Tom Holland (mostly known for being Marvel’s current teen Spiderman) to Twilight’s Robert Pattinson, this movie is certain to be a hit. Set in the town of Knockemsitff in between WW2 and the Vietnam War, Tom Holland’s Character fights off all the evil forces that converge on him and his family in a sinister and enthralling tale adapted from Donald Ray Pollock’s award-winning novel. My schedule has just been cleared for Wednesday night.

UK Netflix release date: Wednesday 16 September

Enola Holmes

Enola Holmes is yet another adaptation of the Sherlock Holmes tales, however, it offers a fresh and feministic approach to the classic stories. Millie Bobby-Brown, known for her classic character in Netflix’s own stranger things, stars as Sherlock Holme’s witty and eccentric sister. Not to mention a couple of heart-throbs thrown in, in true Netflix style such as Henry Caville from the Witcher. When their mother goes missing, a mystery is afoot- and Enola takes it into her own hands.

UK Netflix release date: Wednesday 23 September

Zodiac

Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer and the intense manhunt he inspired, Zodiac is a superbly crafted thriller form the director of Se7en and Panic Room. Featuring an outstanding ensemble cast led by Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr, and Mark Ruffalo, this is the perfect thriller to get stuck into on those cold September nights.
