Netflix is once again set to team up with Chris Smith, executive producer of Tiger King and director of Fyre Festival, for a docuseries about the bitcoin money-laundering scandal that has rocked the internet.
The untitled Netflix docuseries will chronicle the case of Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein and Heather Morgan, who were arrested in their New York City apartment in February 2022. According to a Department of Justice press release, they were arrested “for an alleged conspiracy to launder cryptocurrency that was stolen during the 2016 hack of Bitfinex, a virtual currency exchange, presently valued at approximately $4.5 billion. Thus far, law enforcement has seized over $3.6 billion in cryptocurrency linked to that hack.”
The press release goes on to say, “Lichtenstein and Morgan are charged with conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, and conspiracy to defraud the United States, which carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison.” As the saying goes, play stupid games, win stupid prizes.
While we know what they are being charged with and what they attempted to do, no really knows the why behind it all. Why risk so much for something Heather herself argued probably wouldn’t be worth that much in the end? And the press release from Netflix doesn’t give us much to go as far as what this series could cover. However, after some time poking around the internet, we did discover Heather Morgan’s rap person, Razzlekhan, on a webpage, which would give anyone a fair amount to create a story around.
Whatever the story may end up being, we can’t wait to see the golden touch Netflix has. And if you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to watch The Tinder Swindler while you wait for this new masterpiece to come out.
