Once upon a time, the video rental company Blockbuster was a major film distribution empire. In the 2010’s, the company declined rapidly due to the popularity of video-on-demand streaming services like Netflix, ultimately leading Blockbuster to go out of business. Could movie theaters face the same fate as Blockbuster within the next twenty years?

For instance, when the Golden Globe’s revealed its 2023 nominees, it was crystal clear that Netflix had garnered more film distribution nominations than prominent production companies, such as Paramount pictures. That said, it is quite possible that by 2033, watching a movie inside a movie theater will be a vintage odyssey, like listening to a vinyl record on a turntable or eating dinner at a retro diner.

Moreover, within the next twenty years, video-on-demand streaming services will be the primary outlet major production companies will utilize to premiere and distribute films, allowing in-home movie theaters to become the next big trend on social media.
