Situationship Energy: 9 Movies and Shows That Just Get It

The talking stage exists in a strange in-between. You’re not in a relationship, but you’re also not not in one, and that’s where things get complicated.

A talking stage is a strange place to be. The more time you spend trying to decode someone, the less you seem to understand about where you stand. It’s never clear what each person means to the other.

Somehow, getting to know someone is harder than actually being in a relationship. Talking stages are meant to be light and exciting to the point that you get so many butterflies in your stomach that it hurts. Yet, more often, they turn into a maze of mixed signals, overthinking, and unspoken expectations.

Euphoria (2019-2026)

Euphoria isn’t just about the chaos and intensity of teenage life; it also captures what it feels like to exist in undefined relationships. Nothing is what it seems. No one is fully in a committed relationship, but they also aren’t single.

Maddy and Nate

Nate and Cassie’s relationship is intense, controlling, and deeply unstable. Their relationship mirrors the darker side of what a talking stage can look like.

Nate’s need to be in control shapes Maddy’s behavior, creating a distorted and unpredictable reality. His emotional outbursts and manipulation give the impression of a double life, and instead of stepping away, Maddy feeds into that cycle. She is deeply attached, but reacts intensely when she feels betrayed, turning pain into revenge.

Although their relationship is somewhat exaggerated for the sake of the show, it shows what can happen when uncertainty, emotional dependence, and lack of communication spiral out of control.

Cassie

Then there’s Cassie, the complete opposite of Maddy. Her unrequited obsession [with Nate] stems from insecurity and the fear of abandonment. Cassie is an example of what happens when feelings develop quicker than understanding. Her violent mood swings depend entirely on how Nate treats her at any given moment.

Cassie is the type to overanalyze the little details. She highlights the confusing aspect of the talking stage and how emotionally risky it can be, especially if you care more than you’d like to admit.

Sex Lives of College Girls (2021-2025)

Unlike Euphoria, this show explores talking stages on the opposite end of the spectrum: a softer, more relatable version of talking stages as awkward, confusing, and painfully hopeful.

Bela

Bela’s experiences reflect confusion of mixed signals and unclear intentions. Despite being confident and independent, she finds herself questioning where she stands in her relationships.

Bela analyzes every interaction, wondering if she is misreading signs or if she is coming on too strong. She encapsulates the early stages of the talking stage: she wants the connection and intimacy, but fears the vulnerability.

Whitney

Whitney’s relationships reveal what happens when something starts off without a clear definition. Her story captures the blurred lines and unclear intentions during the talking stages.

There is a clear view of learning how to set boundaries through tests, like seeing who texts first and acting “chill.” Between all the blurred lines, Whitney looks for validation and connection, but struggles between her secrets and expectations.

Although it is a difficult process, we can see that she values herself. It may be too early to stay in something confusing when you’re hoping it will turn into something certain. It is a trial-and-error process.

Leighton

Leighton’s story is shaped by emotional guardedness and internal conflict. Emotionally, she is very closed off and controlled, which sends mixed signals. When things start to feel real, she starts pulling back and avoids any communication. This stems from not wanting to be fully honest with how she really feels.

In her situationship limbo, there are a lot of questions about “what are we?” Her internal struggle with being vulnerable and behaviorally is because she isn’t out of the closet. She’s scared of what things mean when she accepts her whole identity.

500 Days of Summer (2009)

You might think it is a love story, but before jumping ahead to watch it (if you haven’t), think again. This movie is about why a relationship doesn’t work out because one person’s fantasy can clash with the other’s

From Summer’s perspective, she is honest and clear with Tim from the start. She explicitly says she doesn’t believe in love and doesn’t want anything serious. Yet her actions blur that boundary, creating confusion.

On the other hand, Tom struggles with idealization vs reality. He treats emotional connection as proof of a relationship and has selective hearing. Tom falls for the idea of someone rather than for who they really are.

Lost in Translation (2003)

This movie is about an undefined, unspoken connection that is mutually understood. In this film, there are two people: Bob, who feels stuck in his life and marriage, and Charlotte, who is unsure of her purpose.

While this movie is completely different from all the other ones I have mentioned, it tells you that at times, the most important relationships are the ones that help you feel less alone.

While people can open up emotionally, they can also hold back at the same time. Charlotte admits to feeling lost, and Bob hints at a disconnect in his marriage, but it is never said fully. Although they never say everything fully out to be exposed, they still understand each other.

Nothing is ever explicitly said because if you don’t say it, you can’t be rejected. Being as closed off as they are, the small moments that they share say so much more.

Quiet conversations, lingering looks, and choosing to spend time together create an intimacy between the two. Those small acts create moments that carry large emotional weight.

Finding clarity in the in-between

This area of life feels cinematic in the worst way. It’s full of tension, ambiguity, and almost-connections that never fully landed. You’re left interpreting feelings instead of understanding them. Holding onto moments instead of clarity. Trying to make sense of something that was never clearly defined to begin with.

Finding clarity doesn’t necessarily mean getting a clear answer from the other person right away. Sometimes, it is about noticing what isn’t being said. It is about recognizing patterns.

There is also a tendency to fill in the gaps with what we hope is true. To romanticize the silence, to justify the inconsistency, to believe that confusion is just part of something meaningful. Truth is, it only lasts as long as you allow it to.

Talking stages don’t always need to be seen as incomplete. It can be about building something, but also just about something passing through.
