Is there anything Keanu Reeves cannot accomplish? According to the people behind the upcoming action-horror-comedy Day Shift, the Matrix star helped get the Netflix title off the ground, even though he isn’t even in it.
Day Shift stars Jamie Foxx as Bud Jablonski, a vampire hunter. J.J. Perry, a stunt coordinator turned first-time filmmaker, directed the picture, which was produced by Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick films.
Perry, an Army veteran, has a lengthy connection and professional history with Stahelski and served as the supervising stunt coordinator for John Wick: Chapter 2 in 2017.
“Chad Stahelski is one of the first people I met when I got out of the Army,” says Perry.
After a night out with Reeves and Perry in London, where the latter was working as a stunt coordinator on F9, Stahelski decided to join the project as a producer.
“We were all in London, I think Keanu was doing a little pre-release press for John Wick 3 and we’d all met up. We were having a little drink in this very mellow lounge-y kind of environment. It’s just nice to sit and talk when there’s no press or anything. And then, two Scotches in, you start going, ‘Oh, that would be great,’ and you literally stop the party, and it becomes this whole creative session.” recalls Stahelski.
Stahelski asked Perry later in the evening if he was working on any projects that he might assist with. Perry was attempting to get Day Shift off the ground and had already filmed some trial action video with contortionists dressed as vampires.
If Day Shift is well received, expect Perry and Stahelski to reunite for a sequel or two.
Day Shift also stars Dave Franco, Snoop Dogg, and Karla Souza. The movie is now accessible on Netflix.
