Now that the year is almost over and production on all your favorite shows is starting back up; here’s a round-up of all the best shows to catch up on before their upcoming seasons.
Barry – HBO
It doesn’t get much better than Bill Hader as an assassin who starts taking acting classes, and that’s only the beginning for HBO’s Barry. It’s a show that manages to be both funny and intense at the same time and with only two seasons so far it will be easy to catch up. The third season is coming and, despite some covid delays, production should start up again in January. One producer was quoted as saying:
“I think we’re not probably gonna be [going] back until January to do this, but hopefully HBO is going to let the powers that be write Season 4, and maybe we can do those real quick together.”
So if all goes according to plan, we might get seasons 3 and 4 of Barry back-to-back.
What We Do In The Shadows – FX
As far as straight comedies go, this is by far the funniest one available right now. Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) and Taika Waititi (Thor Ragnarok, Jojo Rabbit) came together to make this vampire themed mockumentary based on the movie they also created in 2014. The show recently finished it’s second season, and was about to start production on the third when covid hit.
According to one producer, they don’t have set date to resume (or start) filming now:
“We’re trying to figure out when and how is the right time to do it safely […] now we’re just doing what everyone else is doing, which is trying to figure out what the best safety protocols are and then how to even go beyond those.
Paul Simms, Executive Producer
Despite season 3 being far down the horizon, this is definetely a comedy that deserves watching before the world goes back to normal.
Atlanta – FX
Atlanta has been hailed as one of the best shows of the 21st century, and that’s underselling it. The brainchild of Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, it’s a incredibly written comedy-drama series about a man and his cousin navigating the Atlanta rap scene. But it goes well beyond that to be some of the most interesting and engaging stuff out there right now.
The show is set to resume production of its third season in the first half of 2021, so that’s pretty soon now. The good news is that, apparently, seasons 3 and 4 of the show are already written and ready to go when production starts again.
One of the things that’s been kind of an unexpected boon from COVID-19 was that writers have had a lot of time to write […] Donald Glover and his intrepid team of partners have written everything for season 3 and 4. It is the intent to shoot them all at one time, essentially back to back”
John Landgraf, FX President
If you haven’t watched Atlanta yet, you should. Go do it. Hurry!
The Mandalorian – Disney
You’re definitely heard of this one. But if you’ve been living under a rock (or are unwilling to shell out for Disney+) then maybe you’ve missed the Star Wars-based show about a bounty hunting masked mandalorian. The show just wrapped up its second season with an exciting cliffhanger, leaving many to speculate about the upcoming third season.
All evidence is pointing to a 2022 release date for the third season, with the new show “The Book of Boba Fett” coming out in between sometime in 2021.
Regardless, The Mandalorian is definitely worth watching if you’re a Star Wars fan. And if you want to understand what all this talk about a “Baby Yoda” means.
