Ant-Man 3’s Last Minute Reshoots Mean the MCU Might Become Way Darker

Quantumania is getting reshoots because of its bleak script, so how dark will Phases 5 and 6 be?

Disney+

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is releasing next month, but it’s so dark that it’s getting last-minute reshoots. Elements of the scripts have been changed because the film was completely serious. Quantumania is kicking off the Kang Dynasty storyline that Phase 5 and Phase 6 will be following. If Kang’s introduced correctly, the consequences of his arrival will change the MCU forever.

Ant-Man 3 is coming to cinemas on February 17th, only a month away. But one thing that differentiates it from the rest of Phase 4 is its allegedly dark script. It supposedly proved so bleak for the filmmakers that they had to reshoot some scenes to make them more comedic. Quantumania heralds the official arrival of Kang the Conqueror, who appeared in the season finale of Loki as He Who Remains.

The reshoots are cutting it extremely close, but they’re only replacing material we’ve already seen in the marketing. Fan pressure is weighing down on the producers. The entirety of Phase 4 got horrible reception. Thor: Love and Thunder is the worst movie in the entire phase, and Chris Hemsworth lost interest in playing Thor because of its writing.

This film centers on Scott Lang after his experience saving the world. The writers say it’s a character-driven film more than anything else. Kang is introduced as the successor to Thanos, and a lot of characters already claim he’s an even bigger threat to the MCU. Phases 5 and 6 have been planned out fully, and they end with Avengers: The Kang Dynasty releasing in 2025.

Grave Danger

The producer claims Quantumania is going to have Civil War level consequences. So far nothing tops the impact Thanos had in Infinity War – so the writers want Kang to make an impression. The film’s also going to have ripple effects across the entire universe. It’s a good way to start off Phase 5, making it darker and way more organized than Phase 4 was.

Typically the third film in every hero’s trilogy is the darkest. In Iron Man 3 Tony Stark suffered panic attacks and gave up being a superhero. In Thor: Ragnarok, despite its comedic tone, Mjolnir was destroyed, Odin died, and Asgard fell apart. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 looks like going to be an emotional rollercoaster too.

Quantumania ends Ant-Man’s personal storyline. There are already multiple clips of Scott getting beaten up, and his daughter looks like she’s wearing a Yellowjacket suit. Scott’s daughter is probably going to take his place.

The Master of Time

Kang the Conquerer has always been tied to time travel and alternate universes. His origin itself is convoluted. In the comics, Kang is created by a variant of himself from the future, who travels back in time and repeats the cycle with a new variant. He Who Remains in Loki suggests a different backstory – he’s traveling the multiverse and killing every other variant of himself that he can find.

Kang’s first appearance means that the older generation is getting replaced. This is becoming increasingly obvious with every single Disney+ show setting up new heroes to appear in the movies. After Quantumania, the MCU is never going to be the same again.
