Acclaimed Black Mirror Episode To Get A Sequel?

The future is bright…but maybe not for this sequel.

Charlie Brooker, creator of the highly acclaimed science fiction show Black Mirror, is quite the creative genius. He recently opened up about one episode in particular that has left people thirsting for a sequel to it. “San Junipero” has been called the best episode of series three, and it helped the show win two Primetime Emmy Award nominations.

Black Mirror is a difficult show to describe. It is set in multiple time periods but always in the same universe. Each episode is also loosely connected in some way. The show seeks to point out flaws in human society and how technology plays a role in humankind’s success or demise.

“San Junipero” is a tad different from other Black Mirror episodes in that it ends on a happier note. But unfortunately, Brooker revealed, chances are slim that a sequel to the episode will come about.

At the end of the episode, many were left wondering about the love story between two women, Yorkie and Kelly, whose consciences’ were stuck in time in computer servers. It’s a magnificently written episode with so many layers that it’s hard to wrap your head around all of them at once. Brooker indeed had a thought out reason as to why the episode most likely will not have a sequel.

“There were aspects of the story that I took out. For instance, I’d originally written a scene where Kelly is in a kindergarten and there are children there. When you realize what’s going on – it’s that these are deceased children.

It was too sad and too poignant of a note to hit on in that story. But I kept thinking about how that felt like a whole world in and of itself. I think we almost might do it in a completely different form if we were doing a straight sequel, if that makes sense. Maybe not even as a normal episode.

We do like to drop Easter eggs every so often in other episodes, so we may be referring to San Junipero again. It’s difficult because I don’t think we’d revisit those characters. That felt like such a story and we wouldn’t want to open it up again.”

Well there you have it. Brooker clearly knows what he’s doing when it comes to writing a successful TV science fiction show. Though everyone would love to keep following the romance of Yorkie and Kelly, all good things must come to an end. But not to worry, there is plenty more up Charlie Brooker’s sleeve.
