Ready to get into the Halloween spirit, but not sure what to watch? Add these anime to your celebrations! These anime are filled with the supernatural and spooky. With ghosts, vampires, demons, and even some psychological horror, you won’t be disappointed.

There’s horror, action, and even some lighter shows you can sink your fangs into.

1) Chainsaw Man (2022)

One of the newest entries on this list, Chainsaw Man follows Denji, a broke teenager who hunts supernatural creatures called devils with his loyal companion, a small dog-like creature named Pochita. But when a job goes wrong and the two of them find themselves ripped to shreds, Pochita saves Denji by merging with him on one condition: “Show me your dream.” Now part human and part chainsaw, Denji must face terrifying devils under the watchful eye of the government’s Public Safety Devil Hunters, all while trying to fulfill Pochita’s last wish.

It’s a fantastic series filled with heart, humor, and devil-slaying action that will make you and Denji face fear itself. While it may seem like a nonstop slaughterfest, you’ll find yourself rooting for Denji and his new family even as your heart breaks. And with Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc on the horizon, now is the best time to catch up.

2) Soul Eater (2008)

A classic anime beloved by many, Soul Eater is a staple of the 2000s. We follow Soul Evans and Maka Albarn as they hunt down evil souls at Death Weapon Meister Academy. But if they want Soul to reach the rank of Death Scythe, they’ll need more than just good grades. It’s a tale of friendship and determination as the pair try to get in sync, even when faced with terrifying foes.

With zombie teachers, witches, and a doctor who has more than a few screws loose, Soul Eater will have you glued to your seat. Check it out if you want a show that tells heartfelt stories about what it means to work together and push each other forward.

3) Zom 100: Bucket list of the Dead (2023)

In this comedic twist on the zombie apocalypse plotline, we join Akira Tendo, a young man excited about his new job. However, as time passed, he grew tired of the same old routine. When a surprise zombie outbreak makes him finally get some excitement into his life, he has one goal: Complete every single item on his bucket list before he either dies or becomes a zombie. 

It’s a series that balances humor and tension with a colorful cast. You might find yourself falling in love with the series as our main character tries to live life to the fullest as the world falls down around him. If you want your shows more on the lighter side, try Zom 100.

4) Devilman Crybaby (2018)

An anime that embraces terror and humanity’s darkness to its fullest, Devilman Crybaby follows Akira Fudo. Akira was always a timid boy, but after fusing with a powerful Devil, he became the half-monster known as Devilman. Now a strong devil with a bleeding heart, Akira and his friend Ryou must work together if they’re going to purge the world of evil and protect their loved ones.

If you’re looking for a show that’s heavy on the action, gore, and even the more risque parts of humanity, this is the show for you. Devilman Crybaby uses over-the-top action, and it is not afraid to lean into its darker elements and ask what it means to be human. So beware, it’s NOT a series for the easily perturbed. You have been warned.

5) Serial Experiments Lain (1998)

Serial Experiments Lain leans more into the psychological side of horror, in line with older anime. We follow Lain Iwakura, an introverted young girl who isn’t the biggest fan of technology. But things change when her classmates receive an email from Chisa Yomoda, a classmate who just committed suicide. Now, Lain finds herself dragged into a virtual world called The Wired, with mysteries galore.

This is a series that tackles the concept of mass communication and mixes it with a tense atmosphere full of questions that will have your head spinning. If you want the feel of a classic show with a supernatural and thought-provoking take on the internet, give it a shot.

6) Death Parade (2015)

An eerie take on the horror formula, we join Decim, a stoic bartender in charge of sending people to either reincarnate or disappear into the void. But instead of drinks or lectures, Decim challenges them to games that reveal their true selves. If you think you can hide your inner self from Decim and his fellow arbiters, then think again.

If you’re looking for a chilling anime filled with psychological horror, then give this anime a shot. It’s a spooky show that tackles what lies beneath and wraps it in a neat, stylish bow. It’s got plenty of tension that will leave you wanting more with each game.

7) Hellsing Ultimate (2006)

In the world of Hellsing Ultimate, not only are vampires real, but there’s a secret organization named Hellsing tasked with their extermination. Join Alucard, a powerful vampire, as he and fellow vampire Seras work to slay vampires and keep the British Public safe. When vampire activity starts ramping up, it’s up to the pair to take them down.

If you’re looking for a short story with a more macabre atmosphere, give Hellsing Ultimate a shot. It’s filled with heart-pumping action and classic gothic horror. If you thought vampires were cool before, this series might just turn it up to eleven.

8) Interviews with Monster Girls (2017)

Looking for a break from the typical Halloween thrillers? Interviews with Monster Girls is here to deliver in this lighthearted comedy about a high school biology teacher in a world where monsters called Ajin, or Demis, roam the streets. While these half-human monsters may be joining society slowly, Tetsuo Takahashi thinks there’s more to them than meets the eye.

Join Tetsuo in his daily life alongside his three Demi students as he gets to know them through his casual interviews. It’s a series full of heart and comedy with a bit of the supernatural thrown in.
