With the warmer weather, the 2026 box-office releases are heating up. Here are some new movie releases to add to your watchlist this Spring.
The start of the year has been somewhat sparse with big theatrical releases. With summer just around the corner, studios are finally beginning to release some major films worth talking about.
While the summertime is known as the biggest time of the year for movies, there are some spring releases that are just as good– if not better– than those upcoming blockbusters.

There have already been plenty of great films released in early Spring of this year. If you find yourself bored and want to catch up on the latest movies, here are some of the most important releases so far.
Project Hail Mary: Released March 20, 2026
This movie marked the first major release for the Spring theatrical schedule. With Ryan Gosling leading this science fiction film, it was sure to be a hit. If you enjoy a classic space film, you’ll probably enjoy this one.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie: Released April 1, 2026
If you’re looking for a blockbuster release for the whole family, Mario has you covered. This film features tons of well-known characters from the Nintendo games. It has been the most successful movie of the year so far, grossing nearly a billion dollars at the worldwide box office. This will likely be the biggest release of the Spring, so if you haven’t seen it yet, it’s worth watching.
The Drama: Released April 3, 2026
Another recent release that may have flown under the radar was this A24 film starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. It is a dark comedy following an engaged couple who begin to doubt their relationship when Zendaya’s character reveals a disturbing secret about her past. While not a thrilling blockbuster, this movie features a unique story with a stellar cast. This film is one you will be talking about when you leave the theater.
Recent Releases
The releases have yet to go stale this Spring. These fresh films just hit theaters, so if you want to stay in the loop, these are what everybody is currently watching.
Michael: Released April 23, 2026
The current big hit that everyone has been talking about is Michael. This controversial film follows the glamour of Michael Jackson’s life and legacy. In the film, Michael is played by his own nephew, Jaafar Jackson, making the portrayal scarily accurate. Whether you love him or hate him, this release has Michael Jackson making headlines once again.
Is God Is: Released May 15, 2026
Potentially one of the most unique projects of the year is this thriller. The film is directed by playwright Aleshea Harris and follows twin sisters seeking revenge on their own father for nearly killing them and their mother. Everyone in this film has taken great care in its production, and it shows in the final product.
Obsession: Released May 15, 2026
A new classic has been added to the horror genre with Obsession. The story follows a young man who wishes his crush would be in love with him. Soon-to-be smashes
If you’re looking for some certainty within your upcoming watchlist, here are some upcoming releases that are guaranteed to make noise.
The Mandalorian and Grogu: Releases May 22, 2026
Any Star Wars theatrical release is bound to get attention. This story follows the Mandalorian and Baby Yoda, two well-known characters from the Disney+ show, The Mandalorian. Whether this film brings a unique story or just plain action, it will surely be a huge release for the month.
Disclosure Day: Releases June 12, 2026
This film had everybody talking since its trailer was released. Directed by Stephen Spielberg, this sci-fi thriller left viewers with many questions leading up to its release. The project stars Emily Blunt, who is shown in the trailer speaking in uncomfortable clicks and snaps meant to be some sort of extraterrestrial language. It seems as though this film is set to be both a critical and commercial success when all these questions finally receive answers.
Toy Story 5: Releases June 19, 2026
Rounding out the Spring release schedule, Toy Story 5 will likely be the biggest animated film of the year. This already beloved franchise looks to pivot to our current reality, introducing the cast of toys to technology. This movie will have parents taking their kids’ iPads out of their hands and bringing them straight to the theater.
Wildcard Releases
While it is nice to have certainty in the cinema, there is nothing better than going to the movies and leaving feeling pleasantly surprised. These films are some out-of-the-box picks that just might turn out to be the best movies of the year.
I Love Boosters: Releases May 22, 2026
For those demanding color back into their films, this action-comedy will be perfect. The movie star Keke Palmer and her team of professional shoplifters in a world full of saturation. This film might not only be beautiful to look at on the big screen, but it may end up being your favorite comedy of the year.
Backrooms: Releases May 29, 2026
Probably the upcoming release that has left audiences with the most intrigue is Backrooms. Seemingly based on late 2010’s/early 2020’s online content, the plot of this film is still somewhat of a mystery. From what we know thus far, it seems to fit into the horror genre and looks to be unnerving. While the hype has been growing for this project, it is anyone’s guess how the story will unfold.
Stop! That! Train!: Releases June 12, 2026
If you’re looking for something utterly ridiculous, it looks like this film might be for you. This comedy features RuPaul as the president and several queens from the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise, as well as many other famous faces. From the trailers, this movie looks to be one long sketch written by RuPaul and friends. The trailer already feels like a fever dream, and the film will surely multiply the energy tenfold.
Whether you’re a self-proclaimed writerly critic or just a lover of fun and spectacle, there is something for everyone in theaters this Spring. You might even find your new favorite film in this 2026 lineup.
