A new season of Love Island kicks off the week but fans are debating the inclusion of one Islander – Gemma Owens. Daughter of famous footballer Michael Owens, Gemma is the eldest of four children former England and Liverpool star Michael shares with his wife Louise.
One fan poked fun in this tweet:
This follows Dani Dyer previously finding fame on the show, daughter of soap star Danny Dyer.
Fans are judging if the people on the show are genuinely organically picked, or are planted as influencers and famous family members.
In her introduction video, Gemma said “My dad was a professional footballer. You want to have your own goals you don’t want to be known as the daughter of someone.”
“There’s not even a picture of him on my Instagram account.”
This Morning Star Holly Willoughby defended the new Love Island Star saying after the first episode aired:
Holly said: “She did get a lot of attention on social media last night, I think probably because she’s got a famous dad and people always like to have an opinion.”
“I quite liked her, I quite like that she stood back. I thought she was quite dry and I liked that about her.”
This didn’t seem to stop the tweets from fans though, one popular tweet said: “Nepotism isn’t gonna work here, I need Gemma gone the minute we get a vote.”
Fans just seem to want “normal people” on the show, as one fan tweeted: “Can Love Island stop casting all the greedy nepotism babies that are there for brand deals and give us normal people instead?”
Is it time for Love Island to stop casting celebs kids and influencers? Only time will tell with how successful Gemma ends up on the show.
