Lollapalooza wrapped up in Chicago’s Grant Park this past Sunday, and music fans have been buzzing about their favorite sets.
With more than 385,000 people in attendance, and with hundreds of thousands more tuning into the live stream on Hulu, this year’s festival was filled with incredible performances from artists of all different genres. Like after any festival, fans take to social media to share the performances that stood out to them the most.
Here are some highlights from this year’s Lolla lineup:
J-hope
Being one of the most anticipated acts over the festival’s 4-day run, BTS’ j-hope closed out Sunday night with a historic performance, becoming the first South Korean act to ever headline a major US music festival. The BTS fanbase, known as “BTS Army”, gathered worldwide to watch what they declared HOBIPALOOZA, with approximately 105,000 fans in Chicago and millions more tuning into the livestream.
Fans rapped and sang along as the ‘MORE’ superstar performed tracks from his latest album “Jack in The Box”, some older songs from his 2018 mixtape “Hope World”, and a few BTS covers such as “BTS Cypher pt.1” and their global hit “Dynamite”. He closed out the show by welcoming collaborator Becky G onstage to sing their song “Chicken Noodle Soup” together.
Metallica
Older and newer fans alike gathered on Thursday evening to watch Metallica return to the Lollapalooza stage for the first time since 1996. The heavy metal band delivered a 2 hour-long set filled with classics such as “Enter Sandman”, “Nothing Else Matters”, “Whiskey In The Jar”, and much more.
They ended the night with an epic and energetic performance of “Master of Puppets”, while also paying tribute to beloved Stranger Things character Eddie Munson, as the song has gained popularity since being featured in the show’s season 4 finale. Whether it be a diehard fan for decades or a new fan who just started listening, everyone came together to rock out.
Måneskin
Italian rock group Måneskin made a great first impression during their Lollapalooza debut on Sunday afternoon. Performing their most popular hits, such as “Beggin’”, “I Wanna Be Your Slave”, and “MAMMAMIA”, Måneskin made sure the crowd was hyped up and singing loud during the entirety of their hour-long set. They played an awesome show, and did it in style.
Dua Lipa
In her classic bedazzled catsuit, Dua Lipa shined bright on the main stage on Friday night. With 120,000 people in the crowd, Lipa performed songs from her most recent project “Future Nostalgia”, while also playing the fan favorites such as “One Kiss”, “New Rules”, and “Levitating”.
She took to Twitter the next day to thank the fans and express her immense amounts of gratitude, saying, “Last night was a milestone moment for me in my career… Thank you to everyone who believes in me enough to put me on these stages.”
Wallows
If there’s one thing Wallows has proven during Lollapalooza weekend, it’s that they can cater their show to mass audiences AND smaller intimate venues. The California indie-pop band played their main Lolla set on Saturday, playing hits like “Remember When”, “Pleaser”, and “Are You Bored Yet?”; but before that, they played a 1,000-person capacity aftershow at the Vic Theatre Friday night, playing fan-picked tracks like “Pulling Leaves Off Trees” and “Ice Cold Pool”.
