24 years after Streets of Rage 3 was released
Way back in the early 90’s before Sony and Microsoft made their 1st forays into the console market, it was SEGA and Nintendo that ruled the console world.
These iconic companies are responsible for a considerable amount of the titles that we know and love today. One such title released by SEGA way back in 1991 on the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive was Streets of Rage.
Known as Bare Knuckle in Japan, Streets of Rage was a side scrolling beat em’ up game similar to other classics from the era such as Final Fight, Golden Axe and Battletoads.
Between ‘91 and ‘94 the series had 3 entries culminating with Streets of Rage 3. Despite these classics being re-released on multiple platforms over the years, right up to the latest consoles, there has been no further entries in SEGA’s iconic side scroller for 24 years.
Until now. Publisher DotEmu has announced the return of the beat-em-up with Streets of Rage 4. The game is being developed by Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games who have previously remade Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap and Streets of Fury respectively.
Here’s what we know
A statement on the new Game from DotEmu’s site says:
“Featuring hand-drawn visuals from the great team behind 2017’s gorgeous Wonder Boy: The Dragon’s Trap remake, Streets of Rage 4 builds upon the classic trilogy’s game play with new mechanics, a fresh story and a gauntlet of dangerous stages with a serious crime problem.”
Streets of Rage 4 will have solo and local cooperative play like it’s predecessors, but it is not yet known if the game will support online cooperative play. DotEmu are also yet to confirm which platforms the title will be made available on.
In the meantime, check out the reveal trailer below which showcases the games new art style and contains two characters from the original series, Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding.
