In a recent interview, Ed Sheeran revealed that he performed at Tilly Ramsey’s birthday party in return for cooking lessons from her famous chef father.
Gordon Ramsey, a favourite chef of many, reached out to Sheeran to play at his daughter’s birthday party back in 2019. It was her eighteenth, and Sheeran was asked to play a short set. In the end, he played five songs.
The James Bond-themed party was surely enough to attract a crowd, but with Sheeran on the billing, it’s easy to imagine how expensive the party must have cost to throw.
Yet he revealed on a recording of this US radio show that he didn’t ask for an insane sum of money for the performance.
‘I don’t like people saying, “Hey, here is a chunk of money, come and play two songs at this,”’ he said, speaking to the radio host. ‘Whether it be a wedding or whatever.’
Instead, Sheeran asked for cooking lessons from the famous chef.
How did they strike the deal?
When asked about how the deal came about, Sheeran was very blasé.
‘What happened was he emailed me and said, “What would the fee be?” And I said, “You know what? Why don’t I trade your skill for my skill. You come around and give me a cooking lesson, and I’ll play your daughter’s eighteenth.”’
The money both of them saved through this trade must be astronomical.
What did Ramsey teach Sheeran to make?
Sheeran revealed that Ramsey taught him and his wife, Cherry, to make beef wellington and apple tarte tatin—which he delightfully called ‘a posh apple pie.’
His review of the food Ramsey taught the two of them was straight to the point:
‘It was really nice.’
I wonder how often Sheeran makes this dish now.
With the release of his newest album, =, Sheeran has been doing more press appearances, and revealing more strange stories like this one.
On an episode of the popular podcast ‘Off Menu,’ Sheeran revealed he has a secret path leading from his house to a pub he built in his backyard. He also revealed that he saves bottles of wine from important milestones in his life. Maybe he has a bottle he shared with Ramsey, when he taught him and his wife to make beef wellington.
If you can’t afford Gordon Ramsey to come to your house and teach you to cook, don’t worry! TikTok has found a new questionable cooking “technique,” which allows you to cook chicken in a sink with hot water. Be wary, though—Gordon Ramsey would probably frown upon this method. And so would your stomach.
