Oh yes, bestie, we are deep-diving into the world of slow-burn books. Good and even sometimes great things come to those who wait! Especially if it’s a burning love story.
In a world that feels like we are going a million miles an hour, it is a good thing that love stories can slow us down and help us appreciate what we have. We all know that life can really get ahead of us. Sometimes it is best to take a second to slow down. That’s where our love for reading and taking the time to go through the entire adventure begins.
What is a slow-burn and why is it so good?
We will refer to the storytelling version of the ‘slow burn’ definition. A slow burn is a buildup of intensity that could either be emotion or tension over a long period of time. When reading the story, you don’t get the instant connection that you would receive from others.
Realistically, the story would be drawn out. That way, it can expose every part of the characters’ struggles to get to their happy ending. Obviously, this is perfect for readers who enjoy the payoff. Not only do you get to be a part of the impactful moments, but you also get to enjoy the everyday kind of love.
As a result, slow-burn books are so good because you get the entire journey. Not just the major plot points that move the story along, but also throw in heavy details of love. For this reason, we can piece together the tinier details that can add to the grand picture.
Now, let’s take a look at 8 slow-burn books and extra recommendations that give us hope for the long haul.
#1. Slaying the Vampire Conqueror

Slaying the Vampire Conqueror is a slow-burn romantasy written by Carissa Broadbent. Similarly, this story is an enemies-to-lovers that gives us twists and turns outside of the romance.
In summary, this story follows an extremely skilled assassin, Sylina, who has given up a lot for the Goddess and the group she is a part of, even her own eyes. As a result of this, most of her life has been spent protecting her Sisters and doing whatever her Sightmother asks of her. In this case, the task she has received is to kill the vampire conqueror who has just invaded her home.
On the other hand, Atrius is a terrifying soldier who is on a mission to take the entire continent of Glaea from the Pythroa king. Invading the land with the army of vampires he has brought from the continent Obitraes. For this reason, Sylina knows that it is her duty to kill the invader before things get worse.
In order to carry out her mission, Sylina needs to get close to Atrius and become his personal Seer. This leads to Sylina learning that Atrius isn’t exactly what he seems and that their lives may be more alike than she could have ever thought. This book gives us a love story that is more than love at first sight, but it makes us follow along with the surprises and chaos that come with war.
We really don’t get a happy ending until the very end. Despite the never-ending tension that builds throughout the plot.
#2. A Long Time Coming

A Long Time Coming is a slow-burn friends-to-lovers romance written by Meghan Quinn. This story reminds us that sometimes love might be right in front of our faces, and we will never know it.
In short, this story follows the POV of the soon-to-be bride Ophelia “Lia” and her handsome best friend of ten years, Breaker Cane. For the most part, neither of them has thought of the other in a way that was more than friends. They even become neighbors and sometimes share the same bed. Breaker even steps in to become Lia’s man-in-waiting for her wedding and helps her deal with her monster of a mother-in-law.
The problem stems from the fact that Lia’s boyfriend, Brian, proposes to Lia. This is a huge step in their relationship, but Lia doesn’t know if she feels the same way as Brian. Of course she loves him, but something isn’t exactly right.
On the other hand, Breaker steps up for his best friend and goes on all the wedding planning adventures. He helps her get through the struggles and stress that her mother-in-law puts on Lia. He begins to realize that he’s acting and feeling differently when it comes to her. Then it hits him: he loves Lia. However, he can’t just flat out tell her that he loves her, she is his best friend, and getting married to another man.
Despite Lia’s fiancée realizing that Breaker is getting too close to Lia, Breaker continues stepping up and showing her the love she deserves. Will they be able to see the love that they have for each other before it becomes too late?
#3. Hexed

Hexed by Emily McIntire is a dark romance slow burn that is a retelling of The Little Mermaid. This story is about forbidden lovers and gives us the conflict of two worlds colliding.
In this world of mafia bosses and forced marriages, we meet Vanessa Andersen. She lives with her gangster uncle and his family after losing her parents, and learns to do everything that her uncle asks of her. It is only when her cousin, who has previously run away from home, returns with a handsome man that her life begins to shift. Even though she shouldn’t disobey her family, she can’t help but feel like this man is the only one who can truly see her. Even if he is to be married to her cousin, she can’t help her heart.
On the other hand, we meet Enzo Marino, who is a businessman and an underboss to a powerful mafia group. He lives a double life and listens to every command that his father gives him. Even taking on the task of marrying Vanessa’s cousin. That is, until he meets Vanessa. Everything goes out the window when he sees her and hears her voice, which puts him in a trance.
As love painfully grows, they both have to decide which is the better outcome. Forget everything that they know and disobey? Or push away these feelings that are as sweet as a siren’s song?
Their love is forbidden, and they are stuck in a place where fate shouldn’t let them be. This slow burn gives us tension that tells us how villains deserve love, too. With the banter and spice, we are also lulled by the irresistible lure, and the ride is worth the long journey.
#4. Happy Place

Happy Place, written by Emily Henry, is a summer romance slow burn that starts with a bit of not-so-romance. We see that the characters were dating in the past, but just recently they have split up. This story leans into lovers to enemies to fake dating.
In this summer romance, we get to know the characters, Harriet and Wyn. The two had become a couple and a part of a big friend group, which is made up of their friends who are also in relationships with each other. To add to the mystery of what went wrong, the couple has also not told anyone about the fact that they are not together.
Harriet is told about a final summer vacation at Sabrina, one of the friends, dad’s home since he is selling it soon. They plan out this last vacation together and even plan on throwing an impromptu wedding for two of the friends. Harriet shows up for the week-long vacation and sees that Wyn is there. That wouldn’t be a problem if they weren’t trying to hide the truth from everyone.
The entire week, they have to basically fake date each other in order to keep everyone from being suspicious. The vacation home holds so many memories and is basically a spot where they found comfort and happiness. Although this is anything but comfort and happiness when both characters realize what being there means.
Throughout the story, you get to see the different aspects of their predicament and how, even though they are fighting for what they think they believe, you realize that they still love each other.

Although Brishen holds the title of prince, he is not worried about the line to the throne because many other people are ahead of him. He is presented with the idea of an alliance with the human kingdom of Gauri.
Ildiko is the niece of the Gauri king, and she is only important to her family because she can be the piece they need for the alliance. Ildiko is the one who will become the future wife of the prince of Kai. She is horrified by the thought of having to marry the prince. When they are finally together, Brishen realizes that she is more beautiful than he thought. They both begin to fall for each other and learn that they have to overcome the politics and their duties. To sum it all up, as you read, it is hard to see if the forced marriage is something that is going to work for both of them.
