Gallery Platform Los Angeles and Maccarone Los Angeles will be hosting an online exhibition in collaboration with Grimes. The Canadian singer’s show will be featuring and selling her various artwork pieces, as well as her soul.
Canadian artist Grimes, real name Claire Elise Boucher, will be featuring and selling her photographs, drawings, prints, and other conceptual artwork. Her show is called Selling Out and will be featured by Gallery Platform Los Angeles from May 28th to June 3rd and by Maccarone Los Angeles from May 28th to August 31st.
The real showstopper of this online art exhibition is Grimes’s soul. Her soul is to be bought by whoever can make the “best offer.” An article by Bloomberg stated that originally the artist wanted to put the price tag of her soul at a whopping $10 million. Grimes, however, didn’t want anyone to buy it so it was priced as such so that way it would turn people off from purchasing it.
The reasoning behind putting her soul up for bid is a little bit more nuanced than what one would initially think. A quote for the press release of the art gallery exhibition goes as follows, “Selling Out, a conceptual artwork that lends its title to the exhibition, is the culmination of Grimes’ holistic art practice. It expands upon the conceit of partitioning and re-administering one’s identity, whose art is their soul.”
Grimes wants to execute and formalize the idea that every time an artist sells their artwork they are also selling a piece of their soul. The artist continues on by saying, “The purchaser will enter into a contractual agreement that outlines the terms of ownership and ultimately the connection to the joy of artistic expression.”
If that doesn’t seem like the ultimate way to feel truly connected to your favorite artist, then I don’t know what will.
The unique nature of Grimes’s art exhibition is a testament to her distinctive individuality. For starters, earlier this month she and husband Elon Musk welcomed their baby into the world and had named their child, X Æ A-12. Except it had to be changed a bit to adhere to California laws and because Grimes said it “Looks better tbh.” The baby’s name changed from X Æ A-12 to X Æ A-Xii. You know, it does look better tbh.
Grimes’s online art exhibition that will feature her photographs, drawings, prints, as well as the bid for her soul is definitely a darker, unique twist on the everyday art gallery exhibition. If you’re hungry for more eccentric art, then you definitely need to check out this new American Horror Story art gallery.
