Rihanna has made a name for herself with her unique sense of style and for her iconic voice. Recently, she has added on even more to her name as the owner of a highly diverse makeup line and an inclusive lingerie line.
It’s no surprise that Rihanna is making headlines again for her role in the Ocean’s franchise.
The movie has a star-studded cast, including Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Helena Bonham-Carter and many more.
Rihanna’s character, Nine Ball, is unique in that her gorgeous locs were personally requested for the role. She wanted to make Nina Ball more diverse, and personal by keeping her close to her Caribbean roots. Rihanna also kept her Bajan accent throughout the movie, wanting Nine Ball to “be a Caribbean girl who just happens to live in America”
Rihanna’s hair stylist spoke to Refinery29 on this hairstyle choice:
“We thought it would be strong. Her locs would maintain that tie to Africa. She’d keep her accent. She wasn’t just going to be some American girl in this movie. Nine Ball is still a Caribbean girl that just happens to be in America.
We wanted this girl to be cool, chill, and very minimal. She would wear the same things over and over again. But I think the one thing she probably cared about the most was her hair. When people have locs, it’s kind of like their crown. It’s their pride and joy. It’s like a flower… you gotta nourish it and watch it grow. Hair played a really big part in who Nine Ball came to be.”

Rihanna just continues to showcase how cool she is, giving a representation to people of all skin types, and body types. She has also given a spotlight for a less visually represented hair style, locs, while simultaneously sharing her authentic self.
