A24 and Timothée Chalamet have gone absolutely crazy with their marketing for Marty Supreme. From sending a blimp to the sky of Los Angeles to collaborating with rapper EsDeeKid, I can say that this might be a movie to get yourself to the theater for. To celebrate the incoming release of the A24 film Marty Supreme, Tyler, the Creator’s clothing brand, Golf Wang, introduced tons of 1950s-inspired ping-pong merch for the film.
Speaking of Tyler, he made his film debut in the Josh Safdie-directed film alongside Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’Zion, and, of course, Timothée “ping-pong player/rapper” Chalamet. Even though he has amassed tons of fans, Grammy nominations, and hit songs over the course of his career, he wants moviegoers to see him as Tyler Okonma.
“And of course people are going to watch it and know it’s me. But I hope that I just feel like I’m a part of the movie,” he said during an interview with Vanity Fair.
What is Marty Supreme even about anyway?
Is this movie a biopic? No, but it’s close.
Marty Supreme is a fictional story that is inspired by the real-life ping-pong player Marty Reisman. If you don’t know who Reisman is, he was an exceptional table tennis player known for his fashionable looks, eccentric personality, and quick wit in table tennis. He was so intelligent and knowledgeable in ping-pong that his signature trick was to break a cigarette in half from across the table with a ball.
The movie takes place in 1952 New York City and revolves around a fast-talking, charismatic, and egotistical table tennis player named Marty Mauser who has an infatuation with becoming the greatest table tennis player in the world. In short, he wants to do whatever it takes to become the world’s most notable ping-pong player, even when he has an insufferable character.
