Netflix Sees Red In Recent Subscriber Dropoff

With price increases and new streaming competitors entering the market, Netflix may have reason to worry.

With over 150 million subscribers worldwide, it’s hard to imagine Netflix shaking in their boots for too long. But with recent slow growth and subscriber drops, the alpha-streaming service may be beta sooner than we know it.

Netflix by design does not bring in as much as it spends on making their own content or licensing other content from production companies. But that can only continue as an acceptable business model if the subscriber number continues to climb at the anticipated rate–which it’s no longer doing.

While a small dip in one quarter usually wouldn’t be cause for concern. But with Disney Plus arriving in less than two months–and at half the price of Netflix after it’s most recent price hike–the media giant is quickly losing its status as the obligitory streaming service that everyone has. The original content that Netflix creates will keep the company sustained in some form for the significant future, but the familiar two-beat tone that greets users when they open it may be a distant memory before long.
