Netflix’s Making a Murderer series gained plenty of attention, and left us questioning our legal system as a whole.
Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey were accused of the murder of Theresa Halbach and have each served lengthy sentences. Lack of evidence has shown a potentially wrongful conviction, but the two remain in jail waiting out their sentence. Now, the imprisoned uncle and nephew may have a new way out, as someone just confessed to the murder.
After watching Making a Murderer, filmmaker Shawn Rech was compelled to do his own investigating on the faulty legal system. Rech is developing a documentary Convicting a Murderer which explores some of the details not mentioned in the original series.
What Rech Discovered
During his investigation, Rech claims he has acquired a confession from a “notable convicted Wisconsin murderer.” This person, who has yet to be named, admits to the killing of Halbach. Rech is a bit on the fence on whether this is a legitimate confession, saying, “We haven’t confirmed the legitimacy of the confession, but seeing as it was given by a notable convicted murderer from Wisconsin, we feel responsible to deliver any and all possible evidence to law enforcement and legal teams.”
Whether the confession is real or not, Rech is clearly determined to uncover the truth.
Legitimacy of the Confession
Kathleen Zellner, Avery’s topnotch lawyer, is also skeptical, as she believes the confession only happened because there was a 100k reward involved. This is a pretty fair assumption, considering the unnamed person is already a convicted murderer and could very well just be looking for some money.
Hopefully we’ll get to see this new documentary soon. Some reports claim we could see it as early as sometime in October, but we’ll see about that. Even if the confession isn’t legitimate, I still want to see who this unnamed murderer could be.
