A small plane recently crash-landed onto an interstate in Minnesota, hitting a vehicle, but avoiding any injuries.
On Wednesday evening, a single-engine Bellanca Viking plane made a “suspected emergency landing” just before 9:30 pm on Interstate 35, a major highway in the Minneapolis area-city, Arden Hills. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, state troopers arrived on the scene after hearing reports of a plane making an unexpected landing on the highway.
As the plane landed on the interstate, it collided with another vehicle, but the Minnesota State Patrol assured that: “There were no injuries as a result of this crash.”
Responding to the incident with the state troopers, Ramsey County Deputy’s Federation shared photos of the crash-landing on Facebook. They wrote:
While in flight a small plane appeared to have engine failure. The pilot made an emergency landing on 35W.
The pilot was identified as Craig Gifford, a 52-year old Minneapolis resident and competitive aerobic pilot, a sport that involves flying aircraft in a series of maneuvers. Dick Knapinski, spokesman for the Experimental Aircraft Association said that, in their aerobatic training lessons, pilots learn how to better maneuver aircraft in emergency situations. This explains how Gifford was able to pull off such a “textbook emergency landing.”
