New footage of Ho Van Lang, a Vietnamese ‘forest dweller‘ has emerged, showing his first reactions to the outside world.

Posted this week by his friend Alvaro Cerezo on the ‘Docastaway’ channel on YouTube, the video shows his reactions to flying in an airplane for the first time, sailing on a boat, and experiencing city life.  As the ‘real-life Tarzan’ sadly died of liver cancer at 52 years old in September of 2021, the footage is a sentimental reminiscence on the man’s first interactions with the modern world.

Ho Van Lang lived in the forest of the Tra Bong District in Vietnam, along with his father, since he was two years old.  They had fled to the jungle during the Vietnam war, after half of their family was killed during a bombing.  He moved back to civilisation in 2013 in order to get medical help for his father who had become ill.

After living off the land for 41 years, surviving on forest plants and animals as food, Ho Van Lang had a completely new experience in the ‘outside’ world.  He reportedly wasn’t aware that women existed as his father never told him about them.  The new footage shows his shock and awe in reaction to the vast city, as well as to the ocean as he is seen walking along a beach and even scuba diving in the water!

Alvaro Cerezo spoke out about concerns he had with his friend’s drastic change from forest-life to modern life, saying,

“He had spent all his life living in the jungle and then came to live in the ‘civilised world’ where he started eating processed foods and sometimes even drinking alcohol.”

However, Ho Van Lang’s excitement and joy at some of the more beautiful aspects of the civilized world is clear to see.
