While winter means hunkering down for most of us, that isn’t so for the many brave surfers out there.
Of course, Hawaii temperatures are relatively mild this time of year, but the waves are nothing to scoff at. In fact, the winter months (from around November to March) bring some of the biggest swells of the entire year.
While there are many great surfing locales on the Hawaiian islands, Pe’ahi, on the north shore of Maui, has gained particular notoriety for its monstrous waves. The area has earned the ominous nickname of “Jaws” as well.
To a surfing layman like myself, it’s hard not be to be terrified. And hey, I’m sure a few experienced surfers were biting their nails as they watched this too (okay, maybe it’s just me).
