In light of everything that’s going on at the minute, it’s easy for anything non-coronavirus related to slip between the cracks of mainstream news. One stark example of this in recent days includes NASA’s detection of evidence for a possible ‘parallel universe’ where time actually runs backwards.
The idea of parallel universes has long been discussed by scientists and conspiracy theorists alike, but this is the first time NASA has addressed it directly in an evidence based way.
The discovery was made during extensive experiments by a team in Antartica.
The team of researchers, led by a University of Hawai physicist Peter Gorham, used NASA’s Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (or ANITA for short) to collect their evidence. The machine was carried by a giant helium balloon across over a million square kilometres of Antartica and programmed to detect high energy particles that appear to defy the laws of physics.
These particles are called Neutrinos and can be traced all the way back to the Big Bang, they are found on Earth through a process of travelling down from outer space. Although they might not mean much to me and you, scientists can learn a lot from them.
Gohram explained that the vast ice structure of Antartica makes it a perfect place to look for particles such as these, stating: if you flew over Antarctica with radio eyes, you could see right through the ice several miles deep into it and see the subcontinent below.
After completing two flights with ANITA, the team thought they hadn’t managed to find anything of note. It was only when going over their data again that they found signals suggesting evidence of these high-energy particles.
The mind-blowing part of it all was that the particle they found was exploding out of the earth. As a notably heavy particle, it is thought to be impossible for them to divert from their gradual drift down from space. This left the scientists with only one explanation for the particle coming up from the ground, that it was travelling backwards through time.
This discovery was actually made back in 2016, but it has taken until now for the conclusion to be made that it can’t be explained by physics.
In an attempt to explain the phenomenon, the theory of a parallel universe in which everything is running in reverse to ours was created. Everything would be opposite, as far as left and right, but obviously any inhabitants would see themselves as normal and us as the strange ones.
The idea of a “Benjamin Button” style universe sounds exciting, but Gorham says that many people aren’t on board with the wild theory.
Many scientists from across the globe have come out to remind people that although the idea is plausible, it is only one of many theories. So, maybe don’t expect a real life Stranger Things moment any time soon.
Even if it’s not a solid theory, the fact that leading scientists are admitting that the idea is plausible is extremely exciting, and we’re sure there will be much more to come from this in the future. In the mean time, check out other recent space-related discoveries here…
