#FreeBritney: Britney Spear’s Father Moves to End Her Conservatorship

“Recent events” called into question whether she still needed a court to oversee her personal affairs and finances

Britney Spears’ father, Jamie Spears, asked a judge to end the court conservatorship that has controlled the pop star’s life and finances for 13 years.

This follows the release of the popular documentary ‘Framing Britney Spears’ which showed the timeline of her career and life, leading up to her conservatorship. The documentary highlighted the damaging elements of her conservatorship and her mental state.

Jamie Spears himself stated that “recent events” called into question whether she still needed a court to oversee her personal affairs and finances.

This likely refers to the documentaries released on the star and new scrutiny from journalists and talk-show hosts who highlighted how Spears was treated unfairly and sexualized so young and early in her career.

The filing at a court in Los Angeles states: “Ms Spears has told this court that she wants control of her life back without the safety rails of a conservatorship.’

‘She wants to be able to make decisions regarding her own medical care, deciding when, where and how often to get therapy. She wants to control the money she has made from her career and spend it without supervision or oversight.’

‘She wants to be able to get married and have a baby, if she so chooses. In short, she wants to live her life as she chooses without the constraints of a conservator or court proceeding.’

One of the most criticized parts of Spear’s conservatorship was the IUD inserted without her consent.

This tweet states: The Britney Spears IUD is where pro-choice and pro-life America come together. It’s a human rights horror.

The 39-year-old Spears addressed the court twice previously, citing the conservatorship as ‘abusive.’ But was unable to get her conservatorship removed. Many members of the public and celebrities criticised the decision.

It appears that Jamie Spears has crumbled under pressure to give his daughter a free life where she can make her own choices.

A judge will make a final decision on whether the conservatorship of Britney Spears will end, but it appears that Jamie Spears is committed to staying out of the picture.

Lawyers for Jamie Spears said: “As Mr Spears has said again and again, all he wants is what is best for his daughter. If Ms Spears wants to terminate the conservatorship and believes that she can handle her own life, Mr Spears believes that she should get that chance.”

What has Britney said?

The pop star has not officially made a statement yet on her father’s removal from her conservatorship, mainly communicating with fans via Instagram. Although it is unsure how much control she has over her posts.

The morning after the announcement she posted this meme about weight loss, perhaps a cryptic post about control and the weight of her conservatorship as some of the comments seem to suggest.

Back in June, Spears posted this long post, apologizing to fans for ‘pretending like I’ve been ok the past two years … I did it because of my pride and I was embarrassed to share what happened to me.’

Spears’s lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, told the AP in an email that the termination request by her father was a victory and vindication for the singer, but added, “It appears that Mr Spears believes he can try to avoid accountability and justice, including sitting for a sworn deposition and answering other discovery under oath, but as we assess his filing (which was inappropriately sent to the media before it was served on counsel) we will also continue to explore all options.”

The Public Reacts

Many fans are celebrating this small victory in the long #FreeBritney campaign.

Fellow 2000s star and friend, Paris Hilton, shared her thoughts after being a major part of the #FreeBritney campaign. ‘I am so happy that @BritneySpears is one step closer to her freedom. She is such a fighter and a true angel.’

Jamie Spears’s attorney noted that, “this court has recognized that Ms Spears has both the capacity and capability to identify, engage, and instruct counsel of her own choice, on her own, without the assistance of the conservator or the court … she presumably has capacity and capability to handle other contractual and business matters.”

The next hearing is scheduled for 29 September, and the hope is that Spears will be afforded the freedom she has long desired and deserved.
