As you’re scrolling on your FYP, you see a lot of videos titled “the quarter-zip movement.” This trend, despite my brief two minutes on TikTok before uninstalling it, actually caught my attention, and I thought, “Hmm, why not make an article about this, considering I’m a lifestyle/fashion writer?”
So that’s what I decided to do!

The quarter-zip movement trend, explained
What is the “quarter-zip movement” anyway? For those who haven’t been on TikTok for a while, this one is for you. The quarter-zip movement is a popular fashion trend among Black teenagers and young adults, showcasing a shift from Nike Techs and other streetwear to quarter-zip sweaters for a sophisticated and preppy look.
If you’re unfamiliar with a quarter-zip sweater, it’s a typical sweater with a one-quarter zip that runs from the neckline to the chest. These sweaters are usually worn for playing sports, attending schools with strict dress codes, running errands in the cold, etc.
Quarter-zip styling tips
You’re likely to buy a quarter-zip sweater because of this trend. I encourage you to buy one, but to look your absolute best with the sweater, you must figure out how to style it. Here is a list of tips to help you with that!
Wear a T-shirt underneath
The most important thing to know when wearing a quarter-zip sweater is to always layer it with a T-shirt, a collared shirt, and/or a collared shirt with a tie. However, there’s no restriction on the type of shirt you should wear underneath a quarter-zip, nor is there a “no-shirt” rule for quarter-zips. It’s your sweater, so go crazy with it!
Keep the sleeves down
Although this is not a strict requirement, considering the 30-degree temperatures and snowfall that will arrive in a month or two, it is always recommended to keep both sleeves down when walking outside. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
Wear slightly loose jeans
One of the biggest factors in styling a quarter-zip is the type of pants you wear. While tight jeans can be a good option to wear with quarter zippers, I recommend wearing slightly loose jeans, khakis, or chinos to create a balanced and fashionable outfit that makes you comfortable and suits you.
Don’t zip them all the way up or down
You need to give your neck some room to breathe; that’s why you should refrain from zipping all the way up and down. Instead, zip it halfway if you’re wearing a t-shirt and/or a collared shirt, and make sure the shirt’s collar is also exposed.
Try looking for new shoes
The outfit is not complete without proper footwear. If you have shoes that are getting worn out or look tacky, opt for sleek sneakers or loafers. If you want to elevate your footwear wardrobe to look more business casual, consider these black or dark brown dress shoes, and you won’t regret it.
Look for the best cologne
One of my biggest fears when I’m getting ready to go outside is smelling bad. You have the complete quarter-zip outfit, but to make sure you look good, you need to smell good. Always remember to apply cologne before heading out the door to make sure you look absolutely tear for your activities. Use a lint roller
Although this is completely optional, I think using a lint roller would be best for keeping your outfit clean and free of lint and dust particles that could make it look dirty. I highly recommend buying this if you have any pets, live in a house with a lot of dust, have shedding hair, etc.

My opinion
When I first saw this trend, I was impressed and enlightened by the elegant silhouettes of young Black men wearing quarter-zip sweaters and khaki pants. Although I sometimes found this trend funny, I think it may encourage more young men to embrace fashion.
What I mean by this is that men’s fashion is rapidly changing every day, and it doesn’t have time to repeat the same generic style without change. If you’re trying to step into the world of fashion as a teenager or young adult, always come up with new styles, whether it’s with quarter-zips or streetwear. However, you should also remember that you’re still learning about yourself, so do not burn yourself out trying to keep up.
