A cool breeze stirs up the auburn leaves. Rain drips down the windowpane. Autumn is finally here. Start putting away the t-shirts and shorts…
The weather has finally changed. It’s time for hot drinks, pumpkin-spiced treats, and to start layering. But if you’re unsure of how to stay warm and stylish this season, fear not. These are five cute jackets you can wear.
Farmer aesthetic unlocked
A twist on the chore jacket, the barn jacket features a cord collar, pockets, and sometimes a wax coating.
It’s a coat that says “I’m outdoorsy,” even if you hate the thought of wet, muddy feet. I mean, with a name like “the barn jacket,” it has to be durable. So, this coat will withstand anything you throw at it.
Many jackets come with popper fastening as well, making it easier to warm up in than messing with finicky buttons.
The letdown is this coat does not usually come with a hood. If you like a dry head, you may want to purchase a hat, umbrella, or another coat.
How to style
The barn jacket looks great with a simple pair of jeans; choose from a pair of killer boots, loafers, or ballet flats. If you want something a little elevated, try it with a mini skirt and tights to keep your legs warm.

This coat will blow you away
Lately, UNIQLO’s Windbreaker has been all the rage, with its adjustable hood, balloon sleeves (for that little distinguished touch), poppers, and a zip. And, I can see why it’s the stylish solution to a waterproof, weather-resistant coat.
That’s the biggest advantage of the windbreaker. No sopping wet jumpers, or see-through t-shirts (yikes!)
These coats are also lightweight, so if you know you need to carry it around, or if you run hot, it won’t be weighing you down. This also means it’s ideal for outside sports, so if you’re a runner – this is a good choice for you.
But, because of the thinness, it isn’t the best choice if you want something to keep you super warm. It’s also harder to get an adaptive windbreaker, especially since most come with a zip.
How to style
Why not lean into the sporty look of the windbreaker? Style it with some of your fave trainers/sneakers, some tracksuit trousers, and a cap. For a more elevated look, consider a pair of jeans with statement earrings. The easiest way to look cool yet comfortable.

You won’t be in the ‘trenches’ with this coat
Usually made from gabardine (a mixture of cotton and wool), the trench coat often features a belt and wrist buckles, so you can easily adjust the fit.
Nowadays, you can get a trench made from leather, which may be preferred for an edgier look.
The trench coat is such a creative piece. I own two (Yes, two! same color as well). One day, I can feel like Jane Birkin in a French ’60s movie, the next day I can feel like Scully from the X-Files.
The best thing about the trench has to be that it’s full length. It will keep your entire body warm and dry.
Additionally, you can get an adaptive version of the coat with magnet poppers, compared to the usual button closures.
Unfortunately, a trench coat does not come with a hood! So, if you’re particular about getting your hair wet, or don’t want to sling around a wet umbrella all day, this probably isn’t the right choice for you.
How to style
The trench coat NEVER goes out of fashion. It has been the It coat for decades. It’s a timeless piece for any wardrobe.
The beauty of this jacket lies in its versatility. It can be dressed up and dressed down. It’s a coat for all occasions.
You can chuck it over some active wear. And, it will look timeless with a pair of jeans.
If you want to get really fancy, why not try pairing this coat with a smart pair of trousers and a collared shirt? You’ll look chic, utterly stylish, and it’s perfect for a formal occasion (such as work!)
If vintage is your taste, the trench coat is a perfect choice; it can be worn with flares, a mini skirt, or a fifties bodycon dress.

All puffed up
This coat looks how it sounds. It’s a quilted and insulated jacket. So, believe me when I tell you the puffer does not play around when it comes to winter. It is the boss of the colder seasons, both waterproof and warm. Not to mention, you can purchase one with a hood. Longer puffer jackets are also available, so 99% of you will keep dry – just wear practical shoes, and your feet too will be warm too.
How to style
If the puffer jacket gives you childhood flashbacks of when you were forced to wear the biggest, nosiest coat known to humankind – fear not. This coat can, in fact, look stylish. The key is accessories. For a casual look, why not add a cap? A bold scarf will not only look fashionable but also keep you warm. You can even add a pair of statement trousers. Trust me, you’ll look super cool.

Wool you choose this coat?
The wool coat has one major trait- it’s made of wool (duh). But there are so many styles, colours, and shapes to choose from.
Firstly, you can get a long or short coat. The longer one can keep more of your body warm. But a cropped version may be favorable for shorter people who are focused on body proportions. Similarly, an oversized fit is a great choice for layering, but going for a slim fit can accentuate your body shape.
Buttons or a tie waist? A belted coat can be easily adjusted, allowing you to loosen or tighten it as needed. Alternatively, a wool jacket with poppers or magnets can be more accessible for individuals who struggle with other types of closures.
Because of the thick material and lining, this coat will definitely keep you warm and cosy, especially if you opt for a longer choice. Some wool coats even come with a hood, meaning no hat hair!
Sadly, however, they are NOT waterproof, so if you live in an especially wet climate, you may want to avoid this choice.
How to style
Much like the trench, wool coats are versatile for all occasions. They are a formal-looking jacket that can be thrown over any outfit. Try it with jeans and a jumper, and accessorize with sneakers and a cap. Then, BAM, you’ve got a casual look ideal for when you’re running late.
For a dressy event, a long wool coat paired with a maxi skirt and boots looks incredibly classy. Just add tights and a sweater to keep warm.

Final top tips
Remember, when it comes to coats, it’s about quality, not quantity. A good coat should be durable and actually last. It has to, otherwise you’re just gonna be cold and wet.
Also, experiment! It feels too common nowadays to buy a black or beige coat because you want a neutral piece. But here’s the thing, you can buy a colourful or patterned jacket! (If you know you’re going to wear it, of course). It can become the statement piece of any look, which is perfect for winter when you’re gonna be covering up the rest of your outfit.
Now, wrap up warm, get a Pumpkin Spice coffee, and go enjoy fall!
