There is no better time to start over than now. This is the perfect moment to set new goals for yourself and look forward to a fresh start.

Starting off the new semester on the right foot is the perfect way to reset for the New Year.

Whether it’s an improvement to your mindset or routine, getting ready to take on a new semester takes motivation.

Mindset

Getting in the right mindset for the semester will help set everything in place. Balancing the new workload, extracurriculars and social life, it can take a mental toll.

A great way to get your mind in the right space is to set goals. Goal setting should be realistic and obtainable. Great goals to start with would include getting on the Dean’s List or going to the gym three times a week. This way, your brain has a motivation to go out and achieve greatness. To keep your goals on the right track, a reward system might be a good way to keep you going.

Journaling can also be helpful to the mind. Writing down your true feelings and getting everything on the page can help you clear your mind. It can also keep you organized if you write down your routine.

Organization

Organization is key when it comes to college life.

Creating a physical calendar can help you visualize your day or week ahead. Right down every assignment, paper and project you have, so that you don’t miss anything.

Additionally, it’s important to create time for yourself in your busy schedule, so make sure to save time for yourself.

In the classroom this semester

Not only should you strive to take detailed notes in class, but making connections is important too. Professors are a valuable asset to your professional journey. Most professors have connections in the field or are still actively working in their fields, so connecting with them can only help you in the long run.

If you need help, do not hesitate to reach out to your professors. If you have already created a connection with them, this should be easier than if you have never spoken to them. There is nothing worse than feeling lost in your class.

Note-taking in class can be tedious and challenging with a short attention span. Taking physical notes is known to help students retain information better when it comes to studying and recall. Try writing in a notebook rather than a laptop or iPad.

Studying

You have to put the work outside of the classroom to get the best results in class. Studying always poses a challenge, but using motivators can help you successfully study for this semester.

Tell yourself that when you finish an hour of studying you can get yourself a treat. It can be something as small as a coffee. This way, you have a light at the end of the tunnel.

Spread out your study sessions. Cramming can be stressful and unsuccessful. It’s best to space it out little by little. Start as early as a week before if possible. That way, you can absorb the information throughout time and have time to grow your knowledge.

Finding a study place is valuable. A place that is solely used for studying. It’s hard for your brain to switch into that studious mindset if you do multiple things in the same place. Going to the library or coffee shop may help your studying habits.

Curating a study playlist can also help you get locked in for your work. Picking songs without words may help you become less distracted.

You know yourself best. If you are more of a physical learner, write things down. If you prefer to see things and create connections, creating flashcards is a great way to help with recall. Some people like working things out out loud. These methods can all be helpful in the studying process.

This semester, prioritize your health. Mental and physical well-being are of the utmost importance when it comes to college. Walking around campus is always a great way to improve your physical well-being, even if it is just rushing from class to class.

Most college students have access to a gym. The gym is a great resource for stress relief and physical well-being. Starting a gym routine can help start your day or keep you going.

Another method of physical exercise that correlates with mental well-being is yoga and meditation. Doing guided meditation videos in your room can help you clear your mind.

Nutrition

While living on a college campus, you may be restricted to dining hall meals. Yet, it’s still important to make sure you are eating well.

It’s easy to forget to eat breakfast when you rush to class. It’s important to eat something before getting to class in the morning, even if it’s something as small as a granola bar.

Your mind needs energy and gets that energy through food!

Sleep Schedule

Sleep is a key to success at the college level. Making a routine so that you can relax and consistently get a good night’s rest is a great way to set the foundation for a healthy sleep schedule.

According to Cornell Health, a college-aged student needs 7-9 hours of sleep a night. The average college student averages just about six hours of sleep.

While it can be tempting to stay up and study for a big exam or get work done through the night with an energy drink in hand, it ultimately will not result in success.

Me time

You deserve time to yourself, enjoying your hobbies and passions. It is important that you do not overwork yourself and actually live your college life to its fullest. Save time for friendships, watching the one show you’ve been meaning to watch, listening to your favorite albums and finding time to take a break and get off campus.

Me time is not a reward for getting an A on a paper that you have been working on, it’s a human necessity.

Through all of the chaos, everyone should get an opportunity to have a bit of fun and soak in the enjoyment of their twenties. In order to get some of this time, you might have to move things around in your schedule. You should always prioritize yourself and your own mental well-being, and some time to yourself might be the key to getting on the right path.

Setting yourself up for success helps you get on the right track to becoming the best version of yourself for the new semester.
