It’s been 33 years since the Chernobyl power plant explosion, but public interest in the tragedy has increased due to its re-emergence in popular culture.

HBO’s eponymous series and the publication of Adam Higginbotham’s Midnight in Chernobyl have captivated audiences with the events surrounding the devastation of April 1986.

The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, has declared his intention to capitalize on this trend by establishing Chernobyl as an official tourist attraction.

According to the BBC, Zelensky signed a decree this past Wednesday to sanction improvements on the site, declaring that “Chernobyl has been a negative part of Ukraine’s brand. The time has come to change this.”

In spite of high radiation levels, tourists flock to the site each year. Zelensky wishes to increase the interest through efforts to improve cell phone reception and add more walking trails around Chernobyl.
