No one can stop talking about this movie moment.

The scene in question sees former New York mayor and personal lawyer to Trump putting his hands down his pants in the presence of a minor.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm: Delivery of a Prodigious Bribe to American Regime for Make Benefit Once Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan sees the return of Sacha Baron Cohen’s iconic character Borat. Borat, a disgraced journalist, travels to the US in this instalment, with the goal of restoring Kazakhstan’s reputation. The way he does this? By offering his daughter Tutar (played by Maria Bakalova) as a wife for Mike Pence.

The hotly anticipated sequel to the mockumentary comedy Borat came out on October 23rd on Amazon Prime Video. General consensus saw the film as a success, but one scene in particular caused a stir.

The film featured many cameos from well-known actors and celebrities; Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson are credited as starring as themselves. Others, like Mike Pence and Rudy Giuliani appear in the film – though they appear without expressed permission.

What Happens In The Scene?

The controversial scene occurs towards the end of the film. Tutar, Borat’s fifteen-year-old daughter is posing as a journalist, interviewing Giuliani. They retreat to a hotel bedroom, where Tutar takes off Giuliani’s microphone, untucking his shirt as she does so. Giuliani then lies back on the bed, and can be seen to slip his hand into his pants.

At this point, Baron Cohen’s character Borat bursts into the room, shouting: ‘She fifteen. She too old for you.’

Baron Cohen’s Response

Baron Cohen clearly saw this as inappropriate. In character as Borat, Baron Cohen recorded a video addressing the Giuliani scandal.

Whilst this address took a satirical tone, Baron Cohen’s appearance on Good Morning America was more serious.

Baron Cohen appeared alongside Maria Bakalova, who played Tutar. Bakalova is twenty-four-years-old, but plays a fifteen-year-old in the film.

When asked about the controversial scene, Baron Cohen remarked:

“I would say that if the president’s lawyer found what he did there appropriate behavior, then heaven knows what he’s done with other female journalists in hotel rooms.”

“It is what it is. He did what he did, and make your own mind up. It was pretty clear to us.”

Bakalova, when asked, added:

“I’ve always felt safe with our team, with our crew, with Sacha in my corner. I actually never felt that I’ve been in danger. That’s why I’m lucky, because I had them.”

Giuliani’s Response

From the start, Giuliani denied the allegations made. Instead, he maintains that he was simply tucking his shirt in.

On Twitter, he composed a thread of tweets to clarify his side of the story:

Considering the closeness of the US Presidential Election, Giuliani claims the scene is just a way to counter-smear him after the Hunter Biden scandal.

Yet Jena Friedman, writer of the film, argued that anyone who ‘appears in any commercial comedy project has signed a performance release in advance.’

So is everything Giuliani is saying true?

It’s hardly surprising a story like this has come out of the sequel to Borat. The stories surrounding it so far have been crazy – like how Baron Cohen lived with conspiracy theorists for five days as Borat in preparation.
