Sacha Baron Cohen Lived With Conspiracy Theorists As Borat For Five Days

It’s hardly even surprising at this point.

The film star slash comedian slash screenwriter has a name that connotes scandal, outrage, and potential legal trouble. Now, in the aftermath of the release of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (otherwise known as Borat 2), Cohen gives an eye-opening interview into the motivations and processes behind the new installment.

Cohen has revealed as part of the filming process, he lived in-character as Borat with two American conspiracy theorists.

“They’re ordinary folks who are good people, who have just been fed this diet of lies. They’re completely different to the politicians who are motivated by their own power”

Borat 2 comes in a time of white-hot political polarisation, and it is not a subject that Cohen is liable to shy away from.

The political content of the film allegedly earned some pushback while Cohen was working on pitching it to services, specifically as an October release, just before the November 3rd election day in the USA.

Cohen elaborated with a firmly anti-Donald Trump stance:

“We wanted it to be a reminder to women of who they’re voting for — or who they’re not voting for. If you’re a woman and you don’t vote against [Donald Trump], then know what you’re doing for your gender.”

Cohen has been vocal about his distaste for Donald Trump, and continues to urge the public to work against re-electing the man.

The star opened up about his experience of talking politics with his father, who, when asked his thoughts on Trump, gave with a chilling response:

“Two things. He’s extremely entertaining. Far more entertaining than Hillary. Two, he’s a fascist.”

Cohen famously pranked Ryan Seacrest at the 2012 Oscars by spilling flour (dramatised as the ashes of Kim Jong-il) on his suit, an act which bystander Trump did not see the humour in. Like the mature and soon-to-be-presidential man he is, Trump proceeded to take his grievances to Twitter, publicising his wish that Cohen had been “pummeled”.

Cohen’s stunts in the name of satire have a history of landing the star in hot water. Notably, in a recent interview, Cohen reflected on his experiences with being chased down by police during filming for Brüno, another one of Cohen’s cult classics.

Renowned actress Isla Fisher and spouse to Cohen doesn’t take too kindly to the Borat star’s habit of putting himself in dangerous situations.

Cohen’s response?:

“If there’s anything dangerous that I’m going to do, I just don’t tell her until it’s over”
