Technology is getting more and more advanced with every passing day- and now, thanks to this one TikToker armed with a synth and a dream, we can finally hear what mushrooms sound like. I know, it was a question on all of our minds.
TikTok user @modernbiology has figured out a way to transpose the bioelectric changes in the body of plants and mushrooms into triggers for note changes in a specialised synth. The result is a funky and somewhat disconcerting melody.
The account showcases a number of different mushroom species, each with their own unique musical signature.
Characterised by an almost unearthly, sprawling sound, mushroom music sounds exactly how you’d imagined it would. If you’re a fan of experimental noise, this might be one to add to the playlist.
The party doesn’t stop with fungi, however. Modern Biology has also made an entire album based on the musical stylings of various other flora, which is available to stream right now.
Who is @ModernBiology?
In an introduction video posted to their account, Modern Biology reveals that they’re a passionate biology and music nerd- something that their dedication to sharing mushroom music with the world makes clear.
Despite being a trained biologist, they do not make a living off of it (though they did in the past), and they have an extensive musical background, having toured with a band prior to their newest pursuit.
Some of the mushroom music featured on the TikTok account are available to stream on Spotify under ‘Modern Biology,’ with their latest single showcasing the immersive sounds of the amanita species of mushroom. Just in time for the holidays!
First model trains, now plant life- music is no longer just reserved for humans. The haunting sounds of plants and mushrooms may be difficult to get into at first, but the vibe really does grow on you (get it?).
