On September 26, The Strangers: Chapter 2 releases in theaters across the country. Its release has been anticipated as the sequel to The Strangers: Chapter 1 (2024). The connection that Chapter 1 itself has to the original 2008 horror film, The Strangers is unclear. Starring Madelaine Petsch in the reprised role of Maya, the 2025 film is part of a trilogy which aims to explain the origins of Scarecrow, Dollface, and Pin-Up Girl, the killers in each film.

What is The Strangers? (spoilers ahead!)

Released in 2008 by Universal Pictures, The Strangers is a psychological horror. Liv Tyler and Scott Speedman star as Kristen and James, a couple staying in a cabin while attending a wedding. A trio of strangers (ha!) come to the cabin and terrorize the couple throughout the night. After many failed attempts to kill the masked Strangers, Kristen and James find themselves tied to chairs, about to die. In an iconic moment that acts as the film’s thesis, Kristen asks why the trio decided to kill them and one of them says, “Because you were home.” The film concludes with the group deciding the next murder will be easier, implying this is their first kill.

The original film is based on true life crimes, such as the Manson Family murders. Some speculate that the Keddie cabin murders have also acted as inspiration. The film currently holds a 6.1/20 on IMDb and a 50% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some have criticized that the movie has many boring moments. However, it acts as a change in slasher horror. The killers have no motive or moral obligations. In other slashers, the characters have sex or do drugs, and they pay for that with their death. This movie doesn’t fall victim to that part of the canon.

From left to right, the adults are dressed as such: a woman in a porcelain doll mask, a man in a scarecrow head covering, and a woman in a pin-up doll mask.

Newer releases have been… interesting

A sequel to The Strangers was released by Aviron Pictures in 2018. The Strangers: Prey at Night was a forgettable attempt at revitalizing the series with virtually the exact same plot as the original movie. The three masked strangers find a family in a trailer park and torment them. A big difference, though, is that the Strangers are killed by the family, two of whom survive. The film performed about as well as its predecessor, scoring a 5.3/10 on IMDb and a 40% on Rotten Tomatoes.

In 2024, a prequel trilogy was announced and released by Lionsgate. Critics immediately criticized The Strangers: Chapter 1 following its May 2024 release. It follows Madelaine Petsch and Froy Gutierrez as a young couple forced to stay at an Airbnb cabin after their car breaks down. Cast and crew has said the film is both reimagining of the original film and another story within the same universe. This film is quite terrible, as it follows the exact same plot as the 2008 movie, almost beat for beat. The only differences are modernizations, like the use of smartphones, and the inclusion of scenes that show the town the Strangers are from. The couple in this film also acts in a way akin to traditional slasher victims, like smoking weed or having sex. Ultimately, Petsch’s character survives the attacks and the film ends with Maya in the hospital. The film received a 4.1/10 on IMDb and a 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, probably because it was very bad.

Expect something new in The Strangers: Chapter 2

The Strangers: Chapter 2 will veer off course from the original formula of the series. The second installment in the trilogy removes its characters from the strict setting of one house and the surrounding woods. Instead, Chapter 2’s trailer implies that this film will follow Maya’s journey to figure out why this happened and who the Strangers are. Amongst the strange town where her attack happened, the townspeople all seem to know the Strangers and their crimes. With or without their help, Maya wants to uncover the truth and reason.

While the trailer comes across a little cheesy, it should be a refreshing film in the series. Finally, the movie will have taken a different approach that does not feel like we are watching the same movie as the last three. Audiences are also predicting what questions might be answered by the film. The tricky thing about the predictions is that… people have been correct. The trilogy was filmed all at once, but according to director Renny Harlin, the ending had to be rewritten and reshot. People are speculating that this is due to the obvious guesses as to who the Strangers are. Despite these reshoots, the trailer feels obvious in its own way that makes all the extra work a little pointless.

The easiest way to ruin a concept

As the second movie in a trilogy, The Strangers: Chapter 2 will likely end on just as much of a cliff-hanger as Chapter 1. The final instalment should hopefully close itself off and is anticipating a release in 2026. While we may not find out completely who the Strangers are and what their motives are—if any at all—audiences should get a deeper understanding of the characters, the setting, and the history, according to Harlin. But it begs the question, does this trilogy need to happen? Does answering the questions that audiences have actually ruin the original concept for the film?

The Strangers and its subsequent instalments have all focused on the main idea that the Strangers kill for no reason at all. Their crimes are senseless acts of violence that are built on sadism and nothing else. Ultimately, their identities are the least important thing about the movies. The crux of each film is the victims, their innocence, and the cruelty by which the Strangers have targeted them for no apparent reason. To give viewers access into the Strangers and their history—though compelling and entertaining, if done right—may be the exact opposite of what the series needs. Addressing the motivations and background of the Strangers is the antithesis of what made the original film so scary: some people do terrible things because they are human, nothing more.
