Netflix has been releasing its own original Christmas movies yet again this year. With just over 2 weeks to go until Christmas, let’s have a look at the worst five that came out this year.
1. Holidate
Premise: Fed up with being single on holidays, two strangers agree to be each other’s platonic plus-ones all year long, only to catch real feelings along the way.
Notable cast: Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey
Rotten Tomatoes score: 44%
Rotten Tomatoes user review:
Holidate falls in the bland no-man’s land between being sharp enough to appeal to adults (à la Bridesmaids) and tame enough to watch with the whole family.
Karen Hann, Rotten Tomatoes
2. Operation Christmas Drop
Premise: Congressional aide Erica Miller lands at a beachside Air Force base, where she clashes with Capt. Andrew Jantz over his pet project — Operation: Christmas Drop.
Notable cast: Katerina Graham, Alexander Ludwig
Rotten Tomatoes score: 47%
Rotten Tomatoes user review:
Everything in “Operation Christmas Drop” falls predictably into place like children nestled all snug in their beds. Each plot point and character dynamic appears predetermined, and not in a seasonally charming way.
Kyle Turner, Rotten Tomatoes
3. Dolly Parton’s Christmas on the Square
Premise: Fed up with being single on holidays, two strangers agree to be each other’s platonic plus-ones all year long, only to catch real feelings along the way.
Notable cast: Dolly Parton, Christine Baranski, Treat Williams
Rotten Tomatoes score: 64%
Rotten Tomatoes user review:
Flooded with clichés yet never knowingly predictable, it’s certainly unlike anything else you’ll see this festive season, a rollercoaster ride ricocheting towards sentiments of goodwill.
Jess Goodman, Rotten Tomatoes
4. The Princess Switch: Switched Again
Premise: When Duchess Margaret unexpectedly inherits the throne to Montenaro and hits a rough patch with boyfriend Kevin, it’s up to her double, Princess Stacy, to get these star-crossed lovers back together.
Notable cast: Vanessa Hudgens, Sam Palladio, Nick Sagar
Rotten Tomatoes score: 65%
Rotten Tomatoes user review:
Netflix’s latest addition to the cheesy, low-budget Christmas movie canon is only around an hour-and-a-half long, but it feels much, much longer.
Jordan Julian, Rotten Tomatoes
5. The Christmas Chronicles 2
Premise: Teenager Kate Pierce is reunited with Santa Claus when a troublemaker threatens to cancel Christmas — forever.
Notable cast: Kurt Russel, Goldie Hawn, Darby Camp, Judah Lewis
Rotten Tomatoes score: 73%
Rotten Tomatoes user review:
Russell and Hawn do their best to power through, but after almost two increasingly stilted hours of this stuff – which is far too long for a film of this type – the couple’s kindly twinkles look a little strained.
Robbie Collin, Rotten Tomatoes
