Long ago, in the 1980s, Mattel needed a new toy line to compete against the sea of Star Wars figures. In that search, toy designer Mark Taylor’s childhood drawings inspired him and Roger Sweet to create a hero who would later become He-Man. And now, more than 40 years later, He-Man returns to the big screen in Masters of the Universe 2026. If you’re wondering who this warrior is, don’t worry; I’ll be your guide to who this hero of Eternia is and what I hope to see from his newest reboot.
So grab your sword and prepare for battle. We’re about to dive into the world of a legend.
He-Man, the 80s Legend

After the initial success of He-Man, a whole fantasy world was born where sword-and-sorcery fused with futuristic technology. The toyline became so popular that eventually He-Man got his own cartoon, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. Here we got a different version of the hero.
In this new story, He-Man was Prince Adam. Upon meeting the Sorceress of Castle Grayskull, he received his signature Power Sword. He then raised it into the sky and shouted, “By the power of Grayskull… I have the power!” Adam’s adventures pitted him, Battle Cat, Teela, and Man-At-Arms against the evil sorcerer, Skeletor. And so, He-Man’s story was born, and with it came decades of toys, movies, and cartoons.
We received many versions of the Masters of the Universe story. There’s the classic cartoon where Prince Adam fights evil in a villain-of-the-week format that old cartoons tend to follow. She-Ra: Princess of Power gives him a twin sister named She-Ra. The New Adventures of He-Man took things to new heights and took He-Man to new planets. Most recently, in Netflix’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation, Prince Adam dies and the focus shifts to other characters. And now we have a new version of the tale. Now let’s see what our new adventure has in store for us.
Masters of the Universe (2026)

Thanks to Amazon MGM Studios, He-Man is back in a new movie. While He-Man does appear in older live-action movies, we can now see Castle Grayskull and He-Man featuring modern effects. And judging by the trailers, this new take on the story looks visually stunning.
Here we follow yet another take on He-Man. After living on his mother’s home planet, Earth, for 15 years, Prince Adam, now Adam Glenn, is guided to Eternia by the Sword of Power. Unfortunately, Skeletor destroyed and conquered his home. If he wants to save the world, he’ll need to become the hero of destiny, He-Man.
Like Revelations, this reboot seemingly leans into Adam’s relationship with his alter ego. Adam seems unwilling to reconcile his two halves, and it is an interesting take on the IP. Before I give my thoughts, let’s meet He-Man and the rest of the main cast for Masters of the Universe (2026).
Characters
Adam/He-Man

The Prince of Eternia is where it all started. In the original series, he was a rather charming young man with a humorous streak and super strength. Alongside his ferocious pet tiger, Battle Cat, he and his friends would take on the forces of Skeletor one adventure at a time. Now, we see a new take on the hero. Here we see his journey to becoming the legendary hero.
Teela

Our female lead, Teela, is the captain of the Royal Guard with a rather mixed origin. Her main role was to teach Adam fighting, but that changes from medium to medium, with even her heritage changing. Most of the time she acts as Adam’s voice of reason and the classic love interest. However, the one thing that never changes is her devotion to He-Man.
Duncan/Man-At-Arms

Man-At-Arms is the group’s inventor, and largely considered He-Man’s closest ally. In most media, he’s He-Man’s mentor and creates most of the group’s weapons. In some cases, he also acts as Teela’s adoptive father. But he’ll always be the genius weaponmaster who fights alongside He-Man for the sake of Eternia.
Skeletor

The evil sorcerer, Keldor, aka Skeletor, is nothing if not iconic. His origins change depending on the writer. In one continuity, the Havoc Staff cursed him after he kidnapped Adam. In another, he gave up his humanity in exchange for healing. But no matter his origins, his goals remain the same: conquer Castle Grayskull and unlock its secrets to become Master of the Universe. If you want a villain with a flair for the dramatic, then Skeletor is your man.
Hopes and Expectations
He-Man was primarily inspired by classic stories such as John Carter and Conan the Barbarian. He is, without a doubt, a product of the 80s. As a fan of classic heroes such as Captain America, Superman, and Batman, I hope the studio embraces He-Man’s legacy instead of rewriting it entirely. In some more modern reboots, the hero loses themself under all the revisions. When it comes to hero media, you should always be careful of your source material.
I mainly have two worries; first is story direction. In Masters of the Universe, the story and direction tend to change with each reboot. Masters of the Universe: Revelation tells a story where Prince Adam dies, and we focus on the other citizens of Eternia. Classic shows have He-Man front and center. If it tries to do too much, I worry it’ll fall flat. After all, some people prefer classic He-Man while others prefer a more down-to-earth story.
The other thing that worries me is actually its tone. The humor of He-Man has always been pretty campy, and Skeletor is typically portrayed as both theatrical and menacing. If the humor takes over too much, then we risk losing the menacing aura that makes him Skeletor. Luckily, the trailers seem to blend humor and drama very well, so I’m very hopeful for this film. I expect that we’ll see a take on He-Man that adapts the classic 80s action hero archetype to the modern day without sacrificing what made He-Man iconic.
Worth the watch?
Masters of the Universe releases June 5, 2026. And from what I’ve seen from the trailers, the special effects are amazing, and the humor is pretty in line with classic Masters of the Universe.
Most modern reboots or adaptations, such as Netflix’s Devil May Cry, try too hard to lean into modern tropes to be relatable, and while they do have their place, there comes a point where you may as well make a new character or story. Nostalgia is a powerful tool, especially with a long-running IP. It will be okay if Masters of the Universe knows its goals for the characters and sticks to them. I hope you enjoyed your visit through the warrior prince’s story, and here’s to hoping that this classic hero can find his new home in 2026!
