Did the Dune franchise really need a TV show? The finale of HBO’s Dune: Prophecy aired Sunday, December 22, leaving people wondering if this show is a necessary addition to the already booming film saga.

Although there are many connections to the films, the series stands alone with a more unique plot that strays away from Arrakis. But now that the show is over, is it actually worth watching?

Warning: The following content contains spoilers.

10,000 Years Before Dune

For those who haven’t been caught up, Dune: Prophecy explores the origins of the Bene Gesserit. The series takes place 10,000 years before the films. The story follows two Harkonnen sisters as they try to maintain their powerful network across all of the noble houses.

The series has been building up to a grand reveal, as the finale finally exposes the truth behind the web of lies that that Mother Superior, Valya Harkonnen (Emily Watson) and her sister Tula Harkonnen (Oliva Williams) spread to keep their power in the Sisterhood.

Who Stole The Show?

Both Olivia Williams and Emma Canning deliver a beautiful performance as they bring Tula Harkonnen to life. Not only do we get to see Tula’s newfound power and authority at the Sisterhood in her sister’s absence, but we also get to see her compelling backstory.

Throughout the series Tula begins to grow as as her past comes back to haunt her. Not only do we get a glimpse of Tula’s life before the Sisterhood, killing hundred of Atreides men to avenge her brother, but she also becomes the catalyst to the biggest plot twist in the show.

Olivia Williams’ performance stands out among her co-stars just as Tula outshines the other characters in the show. Tula has the most depth as she conituously deals with bending her morals to stay loyal to her sister and those that she loves. She is the true heart of the Sisterhood in a world where emotions are meant to be put aside.

A Dune Worthy Finale

As the series follows multiple stories lines, the last episode is fast paced. We get to see Mother Superior in action, using “the voice” that Dune fans will recognize from the films. There are epic fight sequences with Princess Ynez, giving us a peak into the strong chracter she will become. And there is a whirlwind of collapsing politics as the main antagonist Desmond Hart takes over the Imperium after the Emperor loses his grasp on his authority. And back at the Sisterhood, we see sisters finally exposing the Valya Harkonnen’s murderous past.

There is so much to unpack that its almost impossible for audiences to look away. The finale is lively and action packed with dynamic characters and budding relationships that continue to develop. It gives the perfect set up for another season.

What Can We Expect Next Season?

HBO announced the renewal for season two a few days before the finale. But it’s no surprise given the popularity of the films and its current standing and Number 1 on MAX. There is so much more to explore within the Dune universe, it only makes sense to have this show continue for more seasons.

The finale finally gives us a closer look into who Desmond Hart is. After finding out that Desmond is actually Tula’s child, we find out that he is being controled by a thinking machine. As Valya fights the machine virus in her body, she sees a vision of Desmond Hart being operated on. She catches a glimpse of someone, giving us a sense that the true villain is yet to be introduced. Since Tula doesn’t have the heart to kill her son, there is more to come of Desmond Hart and his manic behavior.

Although the show is less remincent of the films, there are multiple references to Arrakis and Shai Halud (the sandworms). The connections to Dune are there, but the ending is where we finally get to feel the presence of the films’ storyline. The final shot shows Princess Ynez and Mother Superior landing on the familiar planet, Arrakis. Season two will have more scenes on Arrakis, where we will hopefully see more references to the films.

There are still many secrets left to be uncovered and conflict that has yet to be addressed. Fans can expect to see way more action as more characters clash and fight for power.

Worth The Watch?

Although I don’t think that it’s necessary to watch the show to keep up with the films, its a unique glimpse into the origins of the Dune story. The show is enticing, giving Dune fans a chance to immerse themselves in the world as they wait for Dune: Messiah.

The series is a good introduction to Dune for new fans who may not understand the complex plot of the films. The series gives more insight on the fictional world and intricate politics. The plot itself is more digestible and easier to follow than the films.

It is also exciting to see such a powerful female dominated cast. Seeing that the Dune films carry follow powerful male protagonist. It’s empowering to have the world shift with a female focused plot, specfically one where women are the ones secretly in power.

Overall, the show is definitely worth the watch. Even if you have never seen the Dune films, this can be a very good place to start.
