Ace Ventura 3 in Development with Amazon Prime

Alrighty then!

The Pet Detective is back! Jim Carrey’s famous Ace Ventura last hit cinemas in 1995, and after 26 years fans of the franchise could soon see the character back in business.

Although Carrey is considered a Hollywood comedy legend, he became a much beloved household name back in 1994 when he was cast in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. The role lent itself perfectly to Carrey’s wacky humour, vocal manipulation, and over-exaggerative facial expressions. It was an instant hit. But naturally film critics found fault in the slapstick comedy.

The sequel – Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls – faced harsher criticism, but Carrey and the company had the last laugh, earning even more money in the box office. Since then Carrey has moved on to other iconic film roles such as Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty and (of course) the Grinch – leaving Ace Ventura dormant for many years.

Back in December 2019 word first broke about another sequel, and in March 2021 rights holder Morgan Creek confirmed there was in fact a third movie in the works. As to why a third instalment has not happened previously is reportedly down to Carrey himself. Carrey has rarely had interest in sequels, or returning to previous roles, however, it’s an idea he’s become more open to in recent years.

There’s no word so far on what the plot for Ace Ventura 3 will be, but fans are expecting the same slapstick silliness of the first two.

Cast and Crew

As for the crew working on the sequel, Creek revealed “Ace Ventura will see a new day at Amazon as a major motion-picture/theatrical with the Sonic the Hedgehog writers.” Writing duo Pat Casey and Josh Miller’s work on Sonic was well received, and Creek hopes they’ll bring the same to Ace Ventura.

For the cast however, there’s no confirmation at all – even Carrey himself. But the hiring of Casey and Miller is a major hint that Carrey would be on board for the reboot – after all he starred as Dr. Robotnik in Sonic.

Amazon Prime hasn’t shied away from previously producing comedy sequels. On March 5th they released Coming 2 America – which saw Eddie Murphy put back on the crown of Prince Akeem. And back in October they release Sacha Baron Cohen’s Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.

Speaking of sequels, Creek said: “During Covid, audiences have been in love and are thrilled to have beloved characters brought back with new stories.

“We’re pretty excited about our franchise developments with Exorcist and the Ace Ventura franchise – its noticeable from the 3 million fans chatting on the official Facebook page for Ace Ventura that audiences are clamouring for a 3rd instalment.”

Ace Ventura 3: Release Date

As it’s still in the development stage, there’s no word yet from Creek or the rest of the team as to when the sequel could be hitting our screens. But as Hollywood production begins to recover from Coronavirus restrictions, it’s possible filming could begin in 2022 with a 2023 release.
