Why is he doing it?

The public’s sexist response to Shakira’s half time show for the Super-bowl clearly wasn’t enough for The Weeknd. Although we are unsure of his opinion on her ‘controversial’ outfit, it’s clear he’s up for taking away the spotlight and claiming it for his own. I mean, it makes sense, knowing that last year this half time show brought in 102 million viewers. Imagine all of those viewers watching him while the timely release of his new album lurks on the horizon. Interesting.

But The Weeknd isn’t just prepared to promote his album by halves. Oh no. No cost has been spared for this one. He’s reportedly dropped $7 million on this little project. All for 13 minutes of time in the spotlight. Sorry, the Super-bowl half time show.

How COVID-19 has worked in his favour

As much as it sound, we’re not completely hating on The Weeknd. He does have intentions to make it a ‘cinematic experience’ for all those locked at home in lock-down. Giving them more than the usual million dollar a minute setup where a stage is dressed with dancers, marching bands and fireworks. Oh, and the screaming fans, of course.

Yes, he has chosen his moment. COVID-19 has also brought with it not just the coincidental fact that people will obviously have no choice but to watch it. And virtual concerts are a thing, now. The stadium will be like a third full. The rest of the fans will be glued to their screens or devices, watching this man making the world better again. Oh, and his album, which totally isn’t due to come out like a week after this showcase. You can buy it in any DVD retailers, by the way.

The hints so far

The concluding facts of the matter are that we don’t actually know what the singer has planned with his extreme frugality. He’s keeping it a secret, impenetrable and locked away. However, Pepsi did drop this little subtle hint a few weeks ago…

A beacon of normality, mundaneness, and the repetition that has become our lives, The Weeknd’s performance clearly strives to give us a lot more than just a promotion of his album. Clearly, this add proves nothing but that.
