Mick Jagger on Harry Styles: “Superficial Resemblance to My Younger Self”

Mick Jagger weighs in on the frequent comparisons between himself and the British pop star.

It’s not uncommon for the rising and dominant stars of a new generation to be compared to their predecessors: there was Madonna, and now there’s Lady Gaga. There was Mick Jagger, and now there’s Harry Styles.

Except, Mick Jagger doesn’t quite see it that way. In an interview, the Rolling Stones singer explained that Harry Styles bears nothing but a “superficial resemblance to my younger self.”

However, Jagger clarified that this sentiment does not speak to Styles’s talents and abilities, simply to the frequent comparison of the two artists. Jagger said that the two have “an easy relationship.” He went on to say, “I mean, I used to wear a lot more eye make-up than him. Come on, I was much more androgynous. And he doesn’t have a voice like mine or move on stage like me; he just has a superficial resemblance to my younger self, which is fine — he can’t help that.”

Jagger’s comments come on the heel of the release of Styles’ new album “Harry’s House” which has already received strong reviews from critics at Variety and The Guardian.

Styles has also expressed that he is a fan of Sir Mick Jagger, even dressing like the Rolling Stones star in his “As It Was” music video, one of the songs on Styles’ newest album.

In referring to his look being “much more androgynous,” Mick Jagger referenced that both artists were and are famous for having worn dresses (such as Styles’ magazine cover in Vogue) and both have worn makeup.

With Styles’ new album just released on 20 May, Styles continues his Love on Tour series which is due to conclude in March 2023. The Rolling Stones, however, are due to start their The Sixty Tour this summer, starting 9 June in Liverpool.

So, while the two artists may not resemble each other in anything but the superficial sense, they certainly have no problem performing and pulling in crowds.
