Popular screenwriter and producer, Charlie Brooker, more famously known as the creator of TV hit, Black Mirror, is currently writing a ‘mockumentary’ about the mind-boggling experience that has been 2020 and excitingly, we were informed of this news by none other than Hugh Grant, who is expected to star in the show.

The ‘mockumentary’ is set to air on Netflix and it seems that Brooker is inclined to indulge in his comedic skills to reinstate some humour and life into our dystopian year, instead of revelling in its horror, as we’ve seen many a time in Black Mirror. Brooker himself stated that he’s been writing scripts ‘to make himself laugh’, claiming for Radio Times in May that people wouldn’t have ‘the stomach’ for ‘stories about societies falling apart’. This might just be the comedic start to 2021 we need!

Hugh Grant was the first person to inform the public of this particular film whilst doing press for the current TV hit, The Undoing. Apart from acknowledging the filming of the mockumentary, he also added that he would be playing a ‘repellent’ historian with a wig… We eagerly wait in anticipation…

This will mark Brooker’s next adventure with Netflix after the success of Black Mirror and after his COVID edition of Annual Wipes, renamed as Charlie Brooker’s Antiviral Wipe, which was aired on BBC 2 in March this year, surrounding the outbreak of the pandemic.

Brooker’s no doubt the comedic interpretation of the year might be just what we need to re-inspire ourselves for 2021. After a year of confusion, uncertainty and sadness, here’s to hoping that Brooker can motivate us to maximise next year!
