With the winter season upon us, many take advantage of the calm, cozy atmosphere by winding down. One may want to grab a cup of hot cocoa and a soft blanket on their way to the couch. Some may choose to turn down the lights and pick up a good book. And for many, they use music as a way to enhance this cozy winter atmosphere. The following ten tracks are absolute necessities during the winter season, each complementing the serene and snug vibe.
1. “my tears ricochet” by Taylor Swift
Truthfully, you can pick any song from Taylor Swift’s folklore, and it would fit right in with this list. “My Tears Ricochet” tells the story of the ghost of a dead woman encountering her murderer at her funeral. “Ricochet” refers to the pain this woman endured from her murderer (a male), having a stronger effect on him. It’s the tragic conclusion of a toxic, terrible obsession. Notable for its intensely grief-stricken lyrics, this haunting track is a must-have for your playlist on cozy winter nights.
2. “Linger” by The Cranberries
It’d be nearly impossible to discuss cozy winter tracks without mentioning the gut-wrenching ballad that is “Linger.” Many artists have attempted to cover this iconic song, but none compare to Dolores O’Riordan’s excellent performance. Her strong Irish accent emerges through the yearning lyrics and elegant string arrangement. Nothing beats walking outside on a cold December night with this song playing in your headphones. This track screams “unrequited young love,” making for a profoundly sorrowful addition to one’s playlist, yet a classic nonetheless.
3. “I’ve Seen It” by Olivia Dean
“I’ve Seen It” is a lovely tune from Olivia Dean, a rising star in the neo-soul scene. This closing track from her sophomore album, The Art of Loving, poetically details the feelings of witnessing love. This includes lasting relationships (“30 years”) and painful breakups (“end in tears”), friendly love, and familial love. It’s definitely there, and most importantly, it’s inside each of us. The soft instrumentation paired with Olivia’s calm voice soothes like a lullaby, the perfect “blanket” for a cold, cozy winter night. Pair this up with a cup of hot chocolate, and the vibe will be sure to please.
4. “Shake it Out” by Florence + the Machine
“Shake it Out” stands out from most of the winter tunes in this list. This is because it’s an uplifting anthem about “shaking out” past regrets and ultimately moving on. The hopefulness in Florence Welch’s voice lingers throughout the track, like a lifeboat for listeners drowning in lonely December nights. The pounding drums, choir background, and dramatic organ certainly amplify the “breakthrough” feel of this song. It’s like finally being released from everything that’s been holding you back in your life. Those “ready to suffer” and “ready to hope” will undoubtedly appreciate this song for its beautiful message.
5. “Let the Light In” by Lana Del Rey
“Let the Light In” follows the sensual, hypnotic pattern found in many of Lana’s songs. This track from her album, Did You Know That There’s a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd, features Father John Misty. While not officially addressed, its lyrics seemingly describe an affair between a married male and a single female singer. Fans know the “other woman” lyrical perspective is something Lana is no stranger to exploring, but here it’s presented wonderfully. Her lush, spacey vocals and secretive undertones, such as “pick you up around quarter to three” and “your back door,” are intriguing. The hook elevates the “winter season” magic further, as she pleads with her secret lover to “let the light in.” This “light” more than likely symbolizes the current “in-the-dark” relationship, and she is pleading for something more.
6. “Last Call” by Khalid
While more upbeat in production, “Last Call” follows many of the themes present in these songs. It’s laid-back yet evokes strong emotion. Its title refers to the fleeting moments of a relationship, as he suggests meeting for a “last call.” The catchy hook reflects Khalid’s signature vibe-filled style, sure to attract fans of tracks like “Better” and “Location.” This song fits perfectly in your playlist, as its relaxed beat and calm melodies suit the cozy winter.
7. “Telescope” by Cage the Elephant
“Telescope” from Cage the Elephant is a devastating track, but arguably one of the band’s best efforts. Frontman Matt Schultz’s own experiences inspired this melancholic offering. It follows a man who is suffering from this paranoia as if he’s constantly under surveillance. He speaks of “filling his life with pointless things” and is convinced there’s “nowhere left to turn.” The second verse explains how this man “locks his doors and never leaves” because he is afraid of “what the truth might bring.” Schultz’s isolated and lost emotions are evident throughout, making for another heavy addition to one’s winter season soundtrack.
8. “Streetcar” by Daniel Caesar
“Streetcar” is a cover of Kanye West’s “Street Lights” from the latter’s highly influential 808s and Heartbreaks album. This version is stripped down to Caesar’s soulful singing and a piano, demanding each lyric be heard and felt. This song uses “street lights” as a metaphor for the passing moments of life. It centers around a man who knows his “destination, but I’m just not there”, feeling lost and confused. This track stands as a wonderful representation of the struggle with wanting to change, but not being sure how to.
9. “Human Nature” by Michael Jackson
“Human Nature” is a song from Michael Jackson’s legendary Thriller album. While not nearly as popular as “Thriller” or “Billie Jean”, it draws attention for its catchy hook and Jackson’s delicate vocals. He reflects on the emotional state of being human, exploring the curiosity behind why people do things. Part of his exploration involves wanting to “take a bite” out of the “apple”, representing New York nightlife. It also introduces a woman he’s interested in, and the following verses develop this relationship further. Overall, Jackson smoothly “floats” over the piano and synths, creating another excellent addition to any winter playlist.
10. “Northern Sky” by Nick Drake
To wrap up, “Northern Sky” is another excellent tune to listen to for this winter season. It’s a gentle, starry instrumental that backs the reflective longing Drake has towards a woman who has recently entered his life. He expresses hope for a future with this person, as he has “never felt magic crazy as this.” He croons, “Now you’re here,” believing this girl will brighten his northern sky.” The intimate acoustics combined with Drake’s ethereal tone form a bittersweet yet peaceful masterpiece.
