What’s it about?

Veil is a full-colored manga by Kotteri that has been steadily gaining traction with Gen Z readers. Known for its sophisticated and cozy art style, which is reminiscent of vintage European fashion illustrations, the manga has amassed a cult following on various social media platforms, including TikTok, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and more.

Kotteri originally garnered attention through online artworks and doujinshi (Japanese self-published print works) before moving on to serialized manga. In particular, Pinterest and Twitter users who follow the character illustration niche might recognize their iconic art style. Veil was first published in Japan in the mid 2010s; yet it was only recently that Udon Entertainment picked up the story for international publication. Vol. 1 of Veil was then released in English in June 2025. With that, the manga’s devoted fanbase began to rapidly expand.

The story follows the slow-burn romance between Emma, a blind runaway heiress, and Aleksander, a mysterious police officer. Having met in the city on a wintry day, they gradually develop something deeper than friendship. However, their relationship status is never explicitly named. Instead, the writer focuses our attention on how their interactions in daily life shape their mutual attraction. The series is a perfect treat for slice-of-life enjoyers or readers looking for something slow yet tension-packed.

The beauty of Veil

A gentle romance story

Veil moves through snapshots of Emma and Aleksander’s mundane life. The best way to describe their dynamic is fuzzy and warm, with certain moments that feel softly sensual. The story takes place in a city inspired by Eastern Europe. It is there that our protagonists meet and “fall” for one another. Kotteri gradually acquaints us with the characters and the settings, crafting the narrative in increments. Ultimately, the payoff comes as the manga transitions from the duo’s exterior to their interior lives.

Each chapter is framed as a different scene, making you feel as though you’re watching short films of the protagonists’ lives. The opening chapters are slow, introducing you to “she” and “he.” This forms a key ingredient of Veil‘s charm; with the characters’ names obscured, we are instead greeted by their essence. Kotteri employs other narrative techniques that further enhance this mystique, breaking many manga and romance storytelling conventions.

In between manga panels, there are longer segments featuring character backstories, story themes, or the author’s own interjections. These segments are occasionally even told from the perspectives of inanimate objects. Although they may catch you off guard during the first read, they prove quite narratively rewarding by fostering a distinctly enchanting atmosphere. Immersing yourself in the world of Veil will make you feel as though you’ve been transported straight into a winter fairytale.

“That’s the thing with freedom, when you taste it once, you want to have it forever.

The same goes for her, since she stopped using her ‘stick’.”

-Kotteri

A lovable cast

“She” is Emma, an heiress who uses her touch to see the world. She has a rebellious side, a clever way with words, and a natural warmth that draws others to her. “He” is Aleksander, a dry police officer with a soft spot. Despite his stony appearance, he is kind, attentive, and accommodating toward his loved ones. Aleksander helps Emma find a job as a telephone operator at his police station, while Emma teaches him to view life through a different lens. Their dynamic is both playful and softly intimate, and it’s sure to satisfy fans who love acts of service.

The elegantly written prose and dialogue immediately pull you into the will-they-won’t-they tug between the two. When describing their relationship, the author remarks that:

“All of this makes it so the temperature of their relation doesn’t really fit in the category of friendship, or love. To be precise, it’s like an extremely fine veil was raised between the two, so fine that they can’t see it, but it tickles them.”

-Kotteri

This veiled stage can be difficult to depict, but Kotteri captures it well. Although the story is told through vignettes that move back and forth in time, there remains a sense of continuity that keeps readers invested.

Each new chapter implores us to question: How did they meet? Where will their relationship go? What challenges await them? Although the slice-of-life nature of the story creates a soft tone, Kotteri still expands upon these questions with surprising maturity.

An instantly recognizable art style

One cannot talk about Veil without mentioning its breathtaking art. Let’s delve into exactly what makes it so special.

Kotteri’s use of loose and expressive lines makes the world appear dynamic and alive. The frequent use of warm, flat colors and minimal shading also conveys a sense of whimsy. And when it comes to character design, Kotteri’s an expert at blending realistic proportions with just the right amount of iconic elements. You can recognize Emma with her doll-like beauty and Aleksander with his fox-like silhouette anywhere.

Veil also takes inspiration from plenty of different luxury brands. The characters’ style is elegant and chic, adding the perfect flavor of style to the story. Emma’s outfits resemble pieces from famous runway shows and collections, and fashion enthusiasts have argued that she is inspired by the iconic Audrey Hepburn. With the character’s charisma and sense of fashion, it’s not hard to see why.

You could even model your winter closet after Veil‘s illustrations. From chic coats to dramatic gowns, there is no shortage of stunning pieces to satisfy the fashion girlies.

Overall, Veil, like a warm cup of coffee, is best enjoyed slowly. Then you’ll get to fully appreciate all the charming details the story has to offer and immerse yourself in the main duo’s one-of-a-kind romance.
