I am beyond excited to tell you all about this new Korean thriller book!
After sixteen years, we will finally get to have the English version of Mrs. Shim is a Killer. Written by Kang Ji-young, this story has been translated into English by Paige Aniyah Morris.
On April 21st, 2026, Mrs. Shim made its English debut after being published in South Korea in 2010. Kang Ji-young excels in writing thrillers or crime fiction that bring strong female characters to the table. The translated Mrs. Shim is no different, and her story is full of suspense.
So if you have been looking for your next thriller, this one is for you!
What is Mrs. Shim is a Killer?
Mrs. Shim has a lot of bad luck in her life. She is a middle-aged woman who has not only lost her husband, but has now lost her job as a butcher. Her husband died and left the family with no money, and the butcher shop she worked for has gone bankrupt.
She is desperate for help. She has her own kids to feed, and she also takes care of her elderly neighbor. Mrs. Shim goes looking for work and stumbles across a sketchy ad for a company called the Smile Detective Agency. Thinking that the job is for a cleaning position, she applies. But when she comes to the agency for her interview, it turns out that they want her for a totally different reason.
After discovering that she is very skilled with knives, they offer her a position as one of their assassins. What’s more, Mrs. Shim isn’t very noticeable and blends into the crowd easily, which is perfect for their line of work. Mrs. Shim is too intimidated to say no, and the pay that they offer her is more than she could have hoped for.
So, what does one do when they are asked to become an assassin for a bunch of money? You take the job. Especially if you have the skills for it. Mrs. Shim realizes that this job isn’t really all that different from her old job as a butcher, and she becomes the agency’s best contract killer. She will have to keep her reputation and her job to save her family from debt. This will require her to kill the secret leader of a rival agency, whom she finds out is very familiar.
Why I think you’ll like this?

Kang Ji-young has had tremendous success with her work. She is widely recognized for A Shop for Killers, which was adapted into a K-Drama and released on Hulu and Disney+. The show has been confirmed for a second season, which is shooting in 2026! While not all of her works have been translated into books or adapted, we can show this Korean thriller the same love and hope that it will be given the same chance!
She also has other works that feature a dark tone and visual storytelling, like Goodbye Paradise and Time for Dogs to Eat. The dark themes and visual storytelling applied in those stories are used effectively in this translated book. Kang Ji-young works primarily in thrillers and crime novels, but she also writes short stories.
Second, this is a multi-point-of-view story that spans timelines. We hear from Mrs. Shim’s perspective, but we also get chapters titled The Boss, The Confidant, The Shaman, and The Daughter. There are even parts where we learn about the individuals she must kill before she gets to them. All of these perspectives tie together to bring us to the final standoff, and the other characters’ choices help determine what becomes of Mrs. Shim.
The translated book depicts mothers’ struggles, survival, and economic problems through the lens of social critique. Mrs. Shim has to provide for her children, and she must face the harsh reality that finding a job as an “ajumma”, a middle-aged woman, isn’t easy. She goes from her mundane life of making kimchi to becoming a confident killer, and in doing so, she challenges the stereotypes of femininity to succeed in a male-dominated world.
What are others saying?
Thankfully, we have others who received the book before the release date. Let’s see what they have to say!
The Instagram user nurse_bookie gave Mrs. Shim is a Killer five stars. She states, “I went into this expecting a thriller…and got something so much sharper, stranger, and more heartfelt than I imagined.” Nurse_bookie added that the story was violent but oddly cozy. One thing she said about the book really stuck with me: “At its core, this is not just about crime but about survival, dignity, and what people will do for the ones they love.” This is very intriguing, especially for someone who loves character plots.
In this post, Instagram user elena.luo states that the alternating points of view “…examine wealth, privilege, love, and marriage through a social commentary on contemporary Korean society.” I wonder how this perspective will be conveyed in the translated book. The user also feels like it would have been more efficient with smoother transitions between: “The plot can often feel scattered, leading one to reflect by oneself about inherited trauma and the (broken) nature of relationships.”
But the changing points of view lead us to the book’s final destination, and they give us time to process the emotional aspects of the story.
Would I recommend?
Yes! I understand that the changing points of view might make you hesitate, but I encourage you to give it a shot! The multiple perspectives make the end feel earned.
Mrs. Shim is a Killer is full of suspense and dark humor, and it utterly redefines traditional social standards. This translated book shows how someone seemingly ordinary can be pushed to be someone you shouldn’t underestimate.
The concept of a middle-aged woman turned deadly is so fun. Furthermore, the societal expectations surrounding her and the pressure of a male-dominated space are extremely relevant. We may not relate to the contract killer part, but we can still identify with how Mrs. Shim transitions from being a “doormat” and letting people walk all over her into a strong, capable woman.
Her life is one wild ride, and I love the idea of the book becoming a TV adaptation, because I’m eager to see how they would cast Mrs. Shim.

This translated book seems like a Korean thriller I can get behind. I can’t wait to get my hands on it, and I hope you feel the same!
