Jumpei Mitsui brought Hokusai’s “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” painting to life with LEGOs.

The Japanese LEGO master debuted the model on Twitter over the weekend. It will later join the permanent collection at the Hankyu Brick Museum in Osaka.

Hokusai’s painting has been reimagined and displayed in museums all over the world. Now museum-goers can experience a 3D view of one of the most famous Japanese works of art.

Mitsui explained the vision he had in a tweet:

“I had an image in my head for the theme I wanted to make for many years, but this time I was finally able to realise it. Since it is three-dimensional, it is a work that can be enjoyed from various angles.”

The giant blue wave, white claw-like crest, and wooden boats can be examined from all angles, letting viewers experience the artwork from a new perspective.

LEGO just announced a new collection of Japanese-inspired LEGO art, “LEGO TSUGI,” named after “Kintsugi,” the Japanese practice of repairing broken objects with gold lacquer.

“It reminded us about how there is beauty in broken things and tried to capture the sense of this using LEGO bricks,” LEGO Agency Head of Creative Primus Nair said.

“It’s a small example of the amazing play possibilities of the brand.”
