Glass-bottomed bridges are becoming increasingly popular in the scenic and mountainous regions of China, but after gale-force winds battered the area, a tourist was left stranded in the middle of the crossing.

On Friday, May 7th, disaster struck for an unnamed tourist in the middle of crossing a glass-bottomed bridge at a resort in China’s Jilin Province. When winds suddenly hit 150km per hour in the area, the bridge became unstable and quickly fell apart.

The force of the gusts caused pieces of foundational deck glass to become detached from the infrastructure, falling away and leaving only the skeletal framework behind, with the tourist clinging on to some of the remaining pieces.

Luckily, the tourist was able to be quickly saved with the aid of locals and emergency services.

The photos of the incident, first shared on Chinese social media site Weibo, quickly went viral as other users questioned the stability of such builds and the safety measures which can be used to prevent incidents such as these from occurring again.
