Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers has taken the world by storm this year, with the release of Punisher last June laying down the soundtrack for many of our pandemic experiences. Now, hot off the heels of four Grammy nominations, she comments on the scene.
The 2021 Grammys ceremony (scheduled for January 31st) will undoubtedly be one for the history books. Not only will covid-related restrictions likely make it one to remember, but this year marks the Grammys’ first ever rock-related category with an all-female spread of nominees.
Amongst the all-female nominees for the category of ‘Best Rock Performance’ is Bridgers’ ‘Kyoto’. When interviewed by Entertainment Weekly, Bridgers’ found it hard to be surprised at the lack of male presence in the category.
“This is f***ed up, maybe, but I don’t know of a man’s rock album that really touched me this year, so I’m glad.”
While some have expressed scrutiny for the Grammys’ choices, claiming that the decision was based on social politics rather than anything else, Bridgers’ combats this dismissal:
“If social pressure made it so that more women are being represented, then that’s exactly what social pressure is for. I don’t really give a s**t who’s pandering to who. I think it’s about time, and it’s just cool that it’s happening. “
As for her own nomination, Bridgers’ commented on her unconventional method of discovery.
I slept through it, kind of on purpose — I was like, you know, I don’t want to get my hopes up; I don’t want to watch and be disappointed. I woke up to all these texts. […] Did I buy a burrito? I think I bought a breakfast burrito as a celebration.
