Bryan Cranston would snap at the chance to play Breaking Bad‘s Walter White again.

Surely you’re wondering now, how could Walter White possibly return after the ending of Breaking Bad? Well the answer is simple: Breaking Bad‘s spin-off series Better Call Saul is a prequel to the show, so Cranston reprising his role as Heisenberg in this series would not contradict the ending of Breaking Bad.

“I have been asked to direct an episode every single season and it just didn’t work outBut I do love the show. I think it’s a fantastic show.”

Cranston, who is promoting his upcoming movie The One and Only Ivan on Disney+ at the moment, dubbed Better Call Saul “fantastic” in an interview with Collider.

Indeed, the spin-off series documenting Saul’s downfall from upstanding lawyer Jimmy McGill to sordid criminal lawyer Saul Goodman has a whopping five Emmy nominations this year alone, including one for Outstanding Drama Series.

Cranston notes that he was “asked to direct an episode every single season and it just didn’t work out because of a commitment to doing a play or doing a movie or something.”

“I would be in it [Better Call Saul] if Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould… wanted me to be in it. I would do it in a second.”

When asked whether he would be interested in playing Walter White again, he said, “I would be in it if Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, who are co-executive producers on it, wanted me to be in it. I would do it in a second.”

He further added,” But it hasn’t happened yet, I can tell you, and we’ll see. I don’t know. There’s one more season to go and we’ll see what happens!”

In fact, Vince Gilligan already proposed the idea of bringing Cranston on the show in a previous interview with Collider: “I’d love to have Bryan direct an episode. I got to write an episode [of Breaking Bad] that Bryan directed and I was on set with him every day, and it was a wonderful experience.”

“I’d love to have Bryan direct an episode… He’s a magnificent director. He’s one of the few directors who has a facility for the lightest comedy and the darkest drama. He’s remarkable.”

It seems that we will be seeing Cranston behind the camera if not in front of it in Better Call Saul, but if you can’t wait that long to witness his expertise, his movie The One and Only Ivan releases on August 12.
