One good thing that has come out of the recent COVID pandemic is the large number of entertaining movies and TV shows Netflix has released (which makes me wonder: did they just have them locked away somewhere, saving them for a rainy day?).

Another exciting movie, which Netflix just announced they will be releasing soon, is The Devil All the Time. A psychological thriller adapted from the novel of the same name by Donald Ray Pollock, this movie features an all star-cast: Tom Holland, Bill Skarsgard, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Sebastian Stan, Robert Pattinson, Haley Bennett and Mia Wasikowska.

The seductive gothic story takes place in a small fictional town in Ohio between the end of World War II and the beginning of the Vietnam War. It’s a multi-narrative, intricate tale about a religious community that takes their faith a little too seriously (um, is human sacrifice the natural progression from prayer for a dying wife?).

From a serial killer couple, a preacher played by the delicious Robert Pattinson, and a corrupt sheriff, this movie has everything that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. Or, you know, lying by the edge of your bed.

Actress Eliza Scanlen, who plays Lenora, described it as a film about “the ways people struggle with their faith, and how they define faith for themselves and what it leads them to do. We see in this film very extreme depictions of this struggle.”

She also said that playing her character was “incredibly challenging because the characters are really struggling with God and with their relationship with God. And it leads them to do things that they either regret or things they have to run from.”

This movie is quite a harrowing one, but sometimes we need to delve into the dark to explore deep truths about humanity and the madness that can consume us. Save this one for when you want to watch something with a little bit more substance than your average rom-com but definitely don’t give it a miss.

The Devil All the Time is out on Netflix on September 16 – mark your calendars!
