The Flaming Lips Perform Socially Distanced Gig From Inside of Bubbles

Even the crowd were inside bubbles!

The coronavirus has hit every industry hard but it has especially been affecting the industries that rely on live audiences to make most of their money like movie theaters, sports, music, and amusement parks.

All over the world, many music festivals and concerts have been postponed indefinitely or even straight out cancelled. However, the veteran indie band, The Flaming Lips,  might have figured out a way to perform to in front of live audiences while still practicing social distancing.

On Wednesday, June 10, the band performed their hit song “Race For the Prize” on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert in front of a crowd with each of the members of the band encased in a large inflatable protective bubble. The bubbles allowed the members of the band to move around the stage safely while still being able to maintain hygiene and prevent the spread of germs in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic.

Though inflatable bubbles being used in musical performances is nothing new, having a bad use it for protection against a disease certainly is. The performance given by The Flaming Lips on the late show gives hope on how to enjoy a live performance for a world that is still in the middle of a global performance. It shows how the entertainment industry is quickly adapting and coming out with new revolutionary ideas to still put out their content and have the audience enjoy it while protecting everyone from further spreading the coronavirus.
