Last week, Netflix dropped it’s latest unannounced horror flick, “Mercy Black,” a film inspired by the legend of Slender Man.

The film follows Marina (Daniella Pineda), a woman who has spent all of her teenage and adult life in a mental institution due to her participation in a sacrificial blood ritual to appease the titular monster, Mercy Black. Marina is released by her psychiatrist (Janeane Garofalo), who believes Marina is cured of her hallucinations.

I wonder where things could go wrong.

The film is among the latest released by Blumhouse Productions, the juggernaut of horror film production studios. Blumhouse is the studio behind films like “Get Out,” “Sinister,” “The Purge,” and “Glass.”

While no trailer exists, take a look at a few clips from the film:

In February of last year, a Wisconsin girl was sentenced to 40 years in a mental hospital after she stabbed a friend 19 times. She claimed the attack was to please the Slender Man, a fictional online horror character. Another girl who was present at the crime was sentenced to 25 years in a mental hospital. The girls were 12 at the time of the attack.

Director Owen Edgerton says of his film, “We’re not retelling that story. Those stories where someone is victim and responsible party, that scares me, and the way I deal with it is to write about the things that scare me.”

Reviews of the film are mixed. While it currently only holds a 29% on the tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a slightly higher 42% audience score. Meanwhile, the L.A. Times calls it “nerve-wracking throughout.”
